Jerry Rice is 63 years old. He hasn't played in the NFL for over two decades, and at this year's American Century Championship in South Lake Tahoe, he still ran down a heckler mid-round.

A clip posted by Zire Golf on Instagram shows Rice completing a golf swing before a spectator yells something in his direction.

Rice's response was immediate.

He took off after the heckler on the course. The exact round and what was said remain unclear. But the spectators went on to check what Rice ran towards.

"Someone just heckled Jerry Rice at the ACC, and he ran after him," read the text on the clip posted by Zire Golf on Instagram.

The incident occurred during the 37th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada, a 54-hole, modified Stableford-format celebrity event broadcast on NBC and Peacock.

Rice accumulated 72 total points over the weekend to finish 42nd in the 90-player field, struggling through a 7-over-par performance in his final round. Former tennis star Mardy Fish captured his third tournament title with 72 points, holding off defending champion Joe Pavelski.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer was one of several 49ers figures playing in the event. Steve Young finished in 55th place, while 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk ended in 50th. NBA star Steph Curry, one of the tournament's biggest attractions, finished third overall.

Two years ago, Rice was involved in another incident at the American Century Championship. In 2024, TMZ Sports reported that he was caught on camera using bad language toward reporters after they asked him about the Chiefs' wide receivers.

Security had to intervene. Rice was heard telling one reporter, "I will f*** you up." He walked away, saying, "If you want some, come get some."

The heckler incident this week is the latest in that pattern. What set Rice off on this occasion remains unknown.

Record purse and rich history for Jerry Rice

The American Century Championship is one of the country's premier celebrity golf events.

It carries a record purse of $750,000 and raises funds for local and national charities. The 90-player field this year included names like Tony Romo, Jason Kelce, Charles Barkley, and Annika Sorenstam alongside Rice.

Juszczyk, making his third appearance at the event, captured what the week means to many of the participants.

"I look forward to this as soon as the season ends," he told NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco. "It's a competitive environment. You really feel like you're in a legit golf tournament, and that's honestly probably my favorite thing about it. I just love to compete no matter what it is."

Rice has been competing at the event for years. This week, his competitive instincts showed up in a way nobody quite expected.

What do you think? Was Rice right to chase the heckler, or should he have let it go? Let us know in the comments!
