Adam Scott Opens Up on Staying Relevant at 45 in Golf's Modern Era

Nobody gave Adam Scott a deadline for when to stop playing. That is actually a good thing, because he is not following one.

The 45-year-old arrived at Trump National Doral on Tuesday before the 2026 Cadillac Championship and spoke with rare honesty in his press conference.

"There's a big difference between being 35 and 45," Scott said. "At 35, you are looking at like a Rory McIlroy-type age where you're still really in your prime."

He knows where he is in his career, but he is not ready to see it as the final chapter.

Scott said he has worked hard to stay in good shape. Good training advice over the years has helped him avoid the injuries that often trouble players his age. He has no real worries about being ready to tee off this week.

What's made it harder isn't his body but the field around him. "The guys in their 20s are that much better; there are a lot more of 'em, so it's definitely getting tougher out here."

Scott is back in a course where he has good memories. He won here in 2016, the last time the Tour played at Doral before returning this week.

The Blue Monster rewards strong ball-striking. It is long, narrow, and open to the wind, which has always suited his game.

The One Thing Adam Scott Says Is Quietly Holding Him Back

This is where Tuesday's conversation shifted. Scott didn't ask for more data or a better process. He said that too much information is actually the problem.

"I feel like some of the knowledge and some of the information that we get is almost like holding me back from lifting the ceiling," he said. "I would like to kind of break free of that as much as I can and play with instinct."

Play like a kid, that was essentially his point. Let experience take over when the tournament is on the line, but get there first by trusting gut over spreadsheet. His putting is the one thing trailing his overall game right now. Scott said so himself, without much fuss about it.

"If I can turn that around, which can happen quickly, I feel like I can put myself in a good spot."

Justin Rose had another close finish at the Masters recently. Scott mentioned him without being asked and said their careers have almost gone side by side for 25 years.

Seeing Rose stay in the fight seems to give Scott all the motivation he needs.
