Alan Shipnuck Shares Rory McIlroy Story That Changed Everything Between Them

Alan Shipnuck revealed a public peace offering from Rory McIlroy that ended years of tension between the writer and the golfer. The encounter at Pebble Beach followed the release of Shipnuck's unauthorized biography about the superstar.

“And that afternoon, Rory came into the press room and he thanked me very publicly in front of the press corps and the tournament officials, and I felt like that was kind of a public peace offering after what happened at Oakmont,” said Shipnuck.

At last year’s US Open, Shipnuck and McIlroy had an infamous fallout. McIlroy disapproved of Shipnuck's project, Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf's Most Human Superstar, as he was against the idea that Shipnuck would make money off his name.

However, at Pebble Beach, both seem to have mended their ties. After the writer presented McIlroy’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty with a few copies, McIlroy came forward and acknowledged his work. To Shipnuck, the gesture felt like a “public peace offering.”

“And he laughed and he said, I read the first chapter. It was good. It made me laugh. So if he wasn't bothered by what was in that chapter, I think Rory and I are in a good place,” added Shipnuck.

The Green Jacket winner and his caddie, Harry Diamond, had crossed paths with Shipnuck at Pebble Beach. Shipnuck cracked a joke that of all the people, McIlroy had to run into the writer “on a dark, rainy night.”

With McIlroy sharing a laugh, it became clear to Shipnuck that the six-time major winner was unbothered by the “spicy stuff” mentioned in the first chapter, which was mostly about their confrontation.

Shipnuck’s motive behind the biography

Alan Shipnuck was clear about what he wanted to portray through the biography. He intended to give the fans a deeper insight into McIlroy’s “incredible journey.” The Irishman turned pro in 2007 and since then has been a top performer on the PGA Tour.

"His appeal is, I think, that deep down he’s still this kid from the suburbs of Belfast who grew up in a working-class family. And he's retained that humility, that sense of wonder about how far he's travelled in his life.” said Shipnuck.

After all the drama, the duo has visibly sorted out their differences.
