Amateur Golfer Opens Up on Her Calm, Patient Approach to the Game at Chevron Championship: "Just Don't Blink"

LPGA Amateur golfer Farah O'Keefe has a simple approach towards golf, inspired by conversations with her father.
After two rounds at the Chevron Championship, it is looking impressive for the 20-year-old amateur who is tied for third place in a major event.
"My dad and I have always called it that golf is a staring contest," O'Keefe said in a video posted by the LPGA on X on Friday. "And all you have to do is not blink first. So I'm just trying not to blink."
The University of Texas student shot a 4-under 68 in the first round at Memorial Park in Houston. It was the second-best opening round by an amateur in major championship history.
She played well again in the second round and is now 7 (after going bogey-free in the round) under going into the weekend.
O'Keefe's mindset was on full display in round one, and after chipping in on her 12th or 13th hole, she checked the leaderboard on 18 fully expecting to be buried.
"I was fully expecting 6-, 7-under to be into the clubhouse," O'Keefe said. "I realized I was T8 and I was, oh, okay, we're good. We're hanging in there."
Two rounds later, she is well past hanging in there, and the leaderboard says so.
Farah O'Keefe Is Chasing LPGA Chevron Championship History
No amateur player has won a major tournament since Catherine Lacoste won the U.S. Women's Open in 1967.
O'Keefe is one of eight amateur golfers playing this week at Memorial Park. She is the only amateur still fighting near the top of the leaderboard. O'Keefe knows what is at stake, but she is not letting herself get ahead of it.
"I think it's a dream," she said. "It's something that you think about every once in a while and hope for, but I feel like I'm trying to stay composed. There is a lot more golf left to be played. The job is not done, and I'm just going to keep doing what I have been doing because it just happens to be working."
A strong finish would also move her closer to LPGA Tour membership through the LPGA Elite Amateur Pathway. She currently has four LEAP points and needs 20 for eligibility. A top-25 finish this week adds two more.
