Arnold Palmer Forgot Where His Open Glory Lived, His Caddie Hilariously Set Him Straight: Story Revisited

Jan 8, 2026, 6:40 PM CUT

Arnold Palmer found himself in a hilariously confusing situation during the 1989 British Open at Royal Troon. As the legendary golfer tried to recreate an iconic shot for a photograph, his caddie bluntly pointed out his mistake.

The late golfer bagged the British Open title in 1961 with an iconic 6-iron from the rough. However, while that event took place at Royal Birkdale, Palmer mistakenly agreed to recreate the moment at a photographer's request in 1989, despite playing at Royal Kroon.

One of Palmer's close friends, Brev Norwood, disclosed how the seven-time major winner's aide, Tip Anderson, corrected his misconception by informing him about the distance between his actual and desired locations.

Palmer questioned, "Tip, where is that d*** plaque?" to which Anderson replied, "Mr. Palmer, it’s 120 miles south of here, at Royal Birkdale," Norwood recalled Anderson telling Palmer.

While "The King" secured his first British Open title at Royal Birkdale, it's pertinent to note that he also defended it successfully at Royal Kroon in 1962.

Hence, he might have got confused about the venues as he had won the British Open on both courses. However, there's another factor that probably contributed to this slip.

The second factor contributing to Arnold Palmer forgetting his spot of glory

Palmer carried forward the momentum of 1961 into the following year. As a result, 1962 became one of the most glorious years in the late American golfer's career.

Not only did he defend his British Open title in 1962 at Royal Troon, but he also did it in spectacular fashion. A 6-iron from the rough helped Palmer clinch the title in 1961. But this time, it was his 1-iron drive shot that took him to the apex spot and made him the winner.

When the British Open returned to Royal Troon seventeen years later in 1989, Palmer's memory of his two wins had become somewhat intertwined. As a result, his caddie had to clarify his confusion about trying to find Royal Birkdale's rough in Royal Troon.
