Augusta National’s No-Nonsense Dress Code Once Forced Officials to Remove a Coach

Augusta National doesn't negotiate about anything, not on traditions or on etiquette, and certainly not on what you wear on its grounds.
Arizona State men's golf coach Matt Thurmond found that out during the 2025 Masters. He wasn't there to make a fashion statement. He was watching his player, reigning U.S. Amateur champion Josele Ballester, during a practice round.
Then he spotted a familiar face on the range, former Sun Devil Kevin Yu, and walked over without a second thought, simply to say hello. One hug in, Augusta reminded him exactly where he was.
"After about one shot and one quick hello, they came out and said, 'I'm sorry, sir, you can't be on the range with your shorts,'" Thurmond said.

He was sent back to his car. His phone was sitting in his pants pocket. Augusta doesn't allow those on the grounds either. By the time he got his phone back, several messages were already waiting.
Thurmond didn't sulk, and he posted about it publicly and owned the mistake completely. "My bad, it was a mistake I made," he told Golfweek.
"Lucky to be here and appreciate everything here. I just made a mistake."
It was a funny moment, but it revealed how seriously Augusta takes its rules.
Augusta's Dress Code Has No Favorites
Credentials, reputation, and good intentions mean nothing at the rope line.
Patrons watching from outside the ropes were free to wear shorts, but the moment you step inside as a player, coach, or any official, wearing full-length pants is required. There's no negotiation in that.
A similar situation happened in 2022. Masters participant Talor Gooch wore shorts while working on his putting. A club official appeared almost immediately. A pair of rain pants arrived shortly after.
Jason Day has dealt with Augusta’s dress code more publicly than most players. After the outfit controversy in 2024, he said Augusta National Golf Club asked him to submit his clothing plans for review before the 2025 Masters Tournament.
Matt Thurmond showed up in pants the next day, and the problem was solved.
At Augusta National Golf Club, tradition is not flexible. Even a pair of shorts can send you back to the parking lot.
