The Sunday at Memorial Park wasn’t just about Gary Woodland as a winner. But more, it felt like a moment people had been waiting for. Even if they hadn’t said it out loud.

Gary Woodland shot a 3-under 67 to win the Texas Children’s Houston Open by five shots over Nicolai Hojgaard, finishing the week at 21-under. It was his first PGA Tour win since the 2019 U.S. Open and first since brain surgery in 2023.

He was in charge of this one from the start, and it never really looked like it would slip away.

"We play an individual sport out here, but I wasn't alone today," Gary Woodland said. "Anybody that's struggling with something, I hope they see me and don't give up, just keep fighting."

It also got him into the Masters, and he didn’t make a big deal out of it, though, and He kept it simple.

He said there’s still a long road ahead, but for now, he's proud of what he’s done, and the way he played all week, it showed. He understood what this win meant and who he was doing it for.

The PGA Tour's post that evening summed it up in four words: "A win for sports."

Even players other than golfers came to show their appreciation to the golfer. Kansas Jayhawks shared “Beyond proud ❤️” after his win. So do a lot of players come forward to show their heartfelt comments, too.

Gary Woodland's Houston Performance Was as Commanding as the Emotion Around It

Players who had watched the week unfold felt it personally, and Tommy Fleetwood spoke for many inside the ropes.

"It was always 'a when' not 'an if' @GaryWoodland, so proud of everything for you and the family, a huge inspiration to us all!!" Fleetwood posted on X.

Patrick Mahomes kept it short and genuine.

"Congrats!!! Awesome to witness the comeback and getting back in the winners circle!!" the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback wrote on X.

Jeff Darlington of ESPN went a step further in explaining what Sunday really meant.

"I don't know if you'll find a more deserving winner in any major sport this year," Darlington wrote. "Congratulations to the very kind, very tough, very authentic, very brave @GaryWoodland."

Woodland wasn’t done yet. The win in Houston also earned him a spot at Augusta National. But the support on Sunday didn’t start that day. It had already begun weeks before.

"I've got a big fight ahead of me, and I'm going to keep going," he said. "But I'm proud of myself right now."
