There is a lot on the line for Blades Brown this week. The 18-year-old golfer is just one strong finish away from changing his career.
Brown is teeing it up at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson from May 21 to 24. The $10.3 million event is being held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.
The goal is simple but tough. If Brown finishes solo 21st or better, he earns Special Temporary Membership on the PGA Tour.
That status would be a game-changer. It would unlock unlimited sponsor exemptions for the rest of the season.
Right now, Brown has only two sponsor exemptions left. He needs 196 FedExCup points to reach his target.
That number is not random. It matches what Garrick Higgo had when he finished 150th on the FedExCup points list back in 2024.
So far, the season has been a slow build. Brown has made just one cut in four PGA Tour starts, a T34 at the Mexico Open that earned him $35,159.
But the teenager has plenty of talent to back him up. At the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur, he fired rounds of 66-68 to finish as the No. 1 seed at 6-under.
He has been breaking records for a while now. In 2023, Brown became the youngest stroke play co-medalist in U.S. Amateur history, breaking a 103-year-old record held by Bobby Jones.
After that, he turned pro and skipped college altogether. Now he is putting it all on the line in Texas.
His recent PGA Tour form gives him reason to believe. Over his last five starts, Brown has averaged 0.355 Strokes Gained: Total.
He also finished third at the Puerto Rico Open at 14-under. Two weeks ago, he posted a T9 at the Myrtle Beach Classic, averaging 0.341 Strokes Gained: Putting.
The Fallback Plan: Korn Ferry Tour
If the PGA Tour dream does not work out this week, Brown still has a backup. The Korn Ferry Tour is right within his reach.
He has already shown some good form there. In four starts this season, he picked up a runner-up finish and sits 51st on the points list with 185.167 points.
He needs about 53 more points to lock in Korn Ferry Special Temporary Membership. That is roughly equal to a top-16 finish.
Brown actually turned down a sponsor exemption to last week's CJ Cup Byron Nelson to play the Korn Ferry's Tulum Championship. Unfortunately, he missed the cut there.
The teenager is being smart about his next steps. He knows where he wants to be, but he is also keeping his options open.
"Ideally that would be on the PGA Tour, but I'm really close to getting Korn Ferry Tour status," Brown said. "I think that would be a great place to start. It's just having a place to play."
