Brandel Chamblee on Rory McIlroy's Masters Triumph: "No Better Theatre Than Rory"

Golf has seen great champions, although it rarely gets great theatre. But on Sunday at Augusta National, Rory McIlroy gave both, and Brandel Chamblee wasn't letting the moment pass quietly.
The Golf Channel analyst went to X on April 13 to put McIlroy's back-to-back Masters wins into words.
"There is no better stage than Augusta National, and there is no better theatre than Rory," Chamblee wrote.
However, it wasn’t actually just about winning.
Brandel Chamblee said Rory McIlroy showed the full picture of being a champion.
McIlroy embraced Augusta fully—appearing in documentaries, attending the Women’s Amateur and Drive, Chip & Putt, playing with his father, and joining the Par 3 Contest.
And his performance matched everything that was said. Rory McIlroy had a six-shot lead after 36 holes, lost it by Saturday evening, and on Sunday, he went to the 18th tee not even sure where his tee shot had finished.
"Walking off the 18th tee not knowing where my ball was, I think that was the moment of greatest stress," McIlroy said afterward.
McIlroy survived the pressure, and he made important up-and-down saves on the 16th and 17th holes. A practice session on Saturday helped him fix a hook that was starting to affect his shots. When the wind got strong, his iron shots stayed steady and under control.
Across four rounds, he only hit about 55% of fairways and 48 out of 72 greens. Even with these numbers, he still won by one shot over Scottie Scheffler.
Brandel Chamblee About Golf’s Golden Age
Brandel Chamblee also looked at the bigger picture and where golf stands today.
"I'm not sure golf has ever had a more sustained run of great players winning majors," he wrote, adding that the average world ranking of the last 56 major winners has been better than 15th in the world.
McIlroy has finally won his sixth major title, which puts him level with Nick Faldo among Europe’s best golfers. He also joined a very small group of players, including Jack Nicklaus, Faldo, and Tiger Woods, as the only ones to win the Masters in back-to-back years.
His parents, Gerry and Rosie, were in the crowd after missing his 2025 Masters win. McIlroy said he kept thinking about them during the round.
“I obviously wouldn’t be sitting here if it wasn’t for them,” he said. “It’s amazing to have them here.”
So does this back-to-back Masters win make McIlroy one of the all-time greats at Augusta? Let us know below.
