Known for his direct analysis and blunt golf opinions, Brandel Chamblee once again stirred discussion while comparing the top-end games of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.
Chamblee compared them during a discussion on Golf Channel’s Live From the PGA Championship and was posted by Christopher Powers on X.
“Well, if Scottie plays well this week, Rory can’t beat him. Scottie is so demonstrably better than everybody else. It’s just not close. In Rory’s A-game, Scotty’s A-game, if Scottie plays his best golf, Rory cannot beat him.”
The pair entered the tournament as leading favorites, with Scheffler returning as defending champion while McIlroy arrived after completing a back-to-back Masters win in April.
“If Scottie plays his best golf? I would like to put a bet on it, put it that way. I mean, the guy’s just so good,” added Chamblee.
Tournament organizers placed McIlroy in one of the featured groups for the opening two rounds alongside Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm. Scheffler, meanwhile, was grouped with the 2026 Zurich Classic of New Orleans winner Matt Fitzpatrick and the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open winner Justin Rose.
Rory McIlroy Battles Injury as Scottie Scheffler Pursues PGA History
As the discussion around both players continues ahead of the opening round, McIlroy and Scheffler arrive at Aronimink Golf Club carrying very different storylines into the week.
Six-time major winner’s preparation was interrupted earlier in the week after he developed a blister underneath his right pinky toenail during the Truist Championship.
The issue forced him to leave a Tuesday practice session after only three holes, with television coverage showing him removing his shoe on the fairway before returning to the clubhouse.
Despite the setback, McIlroy said the injury will not prevent him from competing as he continues his chase for another Wanamaker Trophy following his Masters victory earlier this season.
Scheffler, on the other hand, enters the championship with a chance to defend the title he won last year.
A victory this week would make the four-time major winner the first golfer since Brooks Koepka to win back-to-back PGA Championships and place him alongside Koepka and Tiger Woods as the only players to achieve the feat during the stroke-play era.
