J.J. Spaun’s U.S. Open victory did not happen overnight. He faced several obstacles along the way.

Spaun and his family endured several trials, including health complications, injuries, sickness, and other problems. However, it was his journey through all these challenges that made his final breakthrough all the more meaningful.

During a press conference on the US Open 2026 on Monday, Spaun revealed how his eldest daughter, Emerson, battled a particularly difficult stretch after suffering from a broken collarbone. More recently, she had to have her tooth pulled out due to a cavity-turned-root canal.

To top it off, he recently had a misdiagnosed illness that greatly affected both his performance and his confidence in the course.

“The last year has gone by very fast. That's one thing that I've noticed. About the time the USGA reached out to send the trophy back, it was bittersweet, but it's been life-changing. A lot of great things have come from winning this wonderful championship. Just honored to be here as the defending champion,” he said.

Spaun talked about how challenging it has been to juggle family responsibilities along with life on tour. However, one of his biggest challenges remained his Type 2 diabetes misdiagnosis in 2018.

Years of ineffective treatment had left him low on energy and struggling to perform. It was only in 2021, when he was correctly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, that things began to slowly change for him.

“It's not going to be easy golf... But the way I persevered and was resilient last year, I've been trying to use that since then, as well," he said.

It’s incredible to note that a lot of Spaun’s career struggles became less intimidating for him after he became a father. He opened up about how he learned to take things in stride during especially low periods in his career.

Whether the reason was ill health, uncertainties about his career, or underperformance, he found himself in a better place mentally once he returned home to his loved ones.

“Yeah, the whole 'Let It Go" was definitely a mantra that I had kind of all year. I felt like I didn't have anything to lose. That was what kind of carried me with this confidence; without being in those situations in the past is like, well, I have nothing to lose. It's kind of easy to play that way," he said.

Now that Spaun is a U.S. Open winner and one of the top-10 players in the world, the stakes are higher than it was last year. He feels the pressure of proving that he belongs among the golf elite each week.

Unlike last year, when he was able to simply play the sport and have fun, he feels like he needs to focus harder on winning and getting ranked higher this time.

“So it was the complete opposite of letting it go. I put more pressure on myself, put way more emphasis on outcome instead of just focusing on my process.”

All said and done, Spaun has always been vocal about the immense support and love he receives from his family. For him, that mattered to him more than his scorecards and helped him gain perspective on himself as a professional golfer.
