Bryson DeChambeau corrects Paul Casey amid LIV Golf South Africa Praise

A minor slip-up from Paul Casey drew a quick correction from teammate Bryson DeChambeau. During a press conference for LIV Golf's South Africa, the two-time major champion pointed out a team name change.

During the press conference on Tuesday, Paul Casey was asked about the significance of LIV Golf’s first event in Africa and the level of global interest it reflects.

“I mean, this is a global tour, so it was only a matter of time. You look at the strength we have within LIV with the Stingers, those guys have been talking about,” said Casey.

At that point, two-time major champion Bryson DeChambeau stepped in and said, “Southern Guards now. It changed,” to which Casey responded with "sorry."

Then again, the Stinger GC's name change is recent. The South African team rebranded as Southern Guards in January.

"This has been an emotional and considered decision, but we felt the time was right to embrace a name and visual identity that more authentically reflects who we are and where we come from," said general manager Richard Glover.

Along with the new name, the team also introduced a new logo featuring a rhino, connecting to both local symbolism and Dean Burmester’s “Birdies for Rhinos” initiative.

Casey then continued by shifting his focus to the standard of golf in South Africa.

Paul Casey on South African golf and returning to familiar ground

The 48-year-old continued about South African golf and his experience of playing in the country:

“South African golf has always been world-class. As long as I've been playing, we have always looked up to a lot of South African players and their skills.”

The South African lineup on the tour is made up of players who have been part of the setup over multiple seasons.

The roster includes Louis Oosthuizen as captain, along with Branden Grace, Dean Burmester, and Charl Schwartzel, continuing together for the 2026 season under the team name Southern Guards GC after the change from Stinger GC earlier this year.

Casey also spoke about returning to the country and his time playing there: “Yeah, I'm happy to be down here. I've played golf in South Africa many times. It's good to be back."

"Never played here [The Club at Steyn City], but I know how much golf means in this part of the world, so I know it's going to be an exciting week.”

Will LIV Golf’s first event in South Africa live up to the expectations on the course? What do you think? Let us know.
