Bryson DeChambeau’s putter gave him problems on Thursday. At the 13th hole in Mexico City, he missed a short putt badly, and one look at his face was enough to understand how upset he was.

FOX Sports Golf posted the clip on X not long after it happened. The commentary team did not sugarcoat it.

“Oh, that didn’t even touch the hole for Bryson there at 13, and we’re seeing that time and time again,” the commentary was heard.

DeChambeau was one under when he missed that putt, but it looked like the moment changed his round.

He never got going again and finished the day at even-par 71, tied for 29th place. Meanwhile, Victor Perez was in top form, making 11 birdies and shooting a 9-under 62 to take a lead. It was not the start DeChambeau wanted.

DeChambeau came to Mexico City with a real chance to make history. No player has won three straight LIV Golf individual titles, and that was the goal. After the first round, it already looks much more difficult.

Club de Golf Chapultepec is not an easy test, with altitude and uneven lies often creating problems even for top players. And for Bryson DeChambeau, Mexico has once again proven to be a course that demands constant adjustment rather than rhythm.

DeChambeau's Troubles Run Deeper Than One Putt

Earlier in the round, his bunker shot on the par-5 16th went over the green, and the ball stopped in a patch of bare mud with very little grass around it.

When this happened, he quickly called for a rules official.

“You’ve got destroyed grass,” he said while pointing at the lie. “Oh, is this rough? Definitely good to see. Guys, this is what we’re playing on, apparently.”

A second official came over, but the ruling did not change. DeChambeau still had to play the ball where it was. He managed to save par, though he walked off shaking his head.

It has been a tough spell for the 32-year-old, and at the Masters last week, he needed only a bogey on the 18th to make the weekend. Instead, he made triple bogey and missed the cut by two shots.

Mexico City was meant to be a fresh start for him, and so far, it has not been that.
