Cameron Young's Father's Connection With PGA Gives Him All the More Reason to Win This Week

via Usta

For golfers, winning a major championship is a dream, but for Cameron Young, a victory at the PGA Championship would be especially meaningful because of his close connection to the tournament. This week, the second major of the year will start with its opening round on Thursday, and Young is among the expert favorites.

He arrived at the venue before it started and, in a presser on Wednesday, opened up about a special reason to win this week. His father, David Young, was a PGA of America professional, so the event is “special” for him and his family.

"The PGA Championship, for our family, is a great week," he said.

His father was a head professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club but never qualified for the tour. However, because of his father’s connections, he got the chance to enjoy spending time around the PGA from a young age. But he spent that time “outside” the ropes like “everyone else.”

Growing up in a family that loves golf, he started the game at a young age and even won the Catholic High School Athletic Association New York State Championship at 15.

He also enjoyed success on the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour, but is still looking for a maiden major win. This week could mark a dream moment for Cameron Young.

Apart from his father’s connection, the PGA Championship 2026 also carries another special importance for him.

Cameron Young’s Childhood Friend Chris Gabriel Joins Him at the PGA Championship

Young’s friend Chris Gabriel is playing in the 2026 PGA Championship. He is among the 20 PGA professionals representing the CoreBridge Financial Team.

Young grew up playing golf with Gabriel and is excited for his friend, praising him for his success so far.

“Great to see him progress through the ranks in the PGA section up there,” Young said. “Yeah, really excited for him. He's always been a good player, so it’s no surprise that he qualified at some point. Yeah, just really excited for him. Looking forward to seeing how he does over the next few years.”

Cameron Young narrowly missed the title at the Masters last month, where he finished tied for third place. Now, coming into the PGA Championship this week, it will be interesting to see how things unfold for him and whether he can finally clinch his maiden major title.

He will start his round on Thursday on the first tee at 1:54 p.m. ET with Keegan Bradley and Justin Thomas, while his friend Gabriel is scheduled to start at 7:01 a.m. ET in a group with William Mouw and Taylor Pendrith on the tenth tee.
