Charley Hull Believes Parents Can Make Kids Hate Golf: The LPGA Star Once Revealed the Reason

Three months ago, Charley Hull appeared on Sky Sports Golf’s podcast, where she spoke about her early golf journey and shared her views on how pushy parenting can make children lose interest in the sport.
At 29, Hull is already a three-time LPGA Tour champion and was introduced to golf at the age of two. Yet, despite getting her into golf at such an early age, Hull's parents weren't overbearing.
"I’ve played golf since I was about two years old, my dad was never a pushy parent, and I think a lot of kids end up hating the sport when parents become too pushy," Charley Hull said in the September 12, 2025, video.
Hull started playing with her father, Dave, at Kettering Golf Club when she was five. By around the age of eleven, Hull reached scratch handicap.

With that supportive environment shaping her early years, Hull won an 18-hole national championship at Turnberry at the age of nine while competing in an open field against adults. She reached scratch handicap at around age eleven.
By the age of thirteen, she left traditional schooling and continued her education through homeschooling to focus more time on golf practice and competition. Hull turned professional in 2013 at the age of sixteen.
Hull carries the same outlook into her personal life.
Charley Hull believes that enjoying the game also means enjoying life
“You’ve only got one life, haven’t you? So you can’t think, ‘Oh, I’ve missed out on that in life. I’ve missed out on that in life.’ You’ve just got to live every moment.” Charley Hull said on the Icon by Motiversity.
Hull said she gave herself time to live her younger years before fully committing to her career, noting that drinking is legal in England from around the age of eighteen or nineteen.
She explained that “I got my younger years out of the way, partying and stuff, when I was 18 - 20. Then I could concentrate on my golf career.” After that period, she said she was able to focus more clearly on her professional path.
