Charley Hull has no regrets. The English golfer bought her caddie a fake scratch card worth £100,000, filmed his reaction, posted it online, and watched the internet turn on her. Her response to the backlash? Loosen up.

Hull spoke to reporters after her opening round at the Women's British Open on Thursday, July 31, at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. She shot a 2-under 69 on home soil. Hull is ranked seventh in the world and is one of the most recognizable figures on the LPGA Tour.

The prank targeted her caddie, Adam Woodward, known to Hull as "Adsy." Hull bought him a fake scratch ticket and filmed his reaction as he believed he had won £100,000, the equivalent of around $134,000. She then posted the video, which showed a jubilant Woodward followed by a second clip of a noticeably less thrilled Woodward after Hull came clean. Social media lit up with criticism, with many calling the prank cruel.

The incident drew attention during the tournament, but Charley Hull made it clear she did not think it was a serious issue. Hull said Adams later laughed about what happened and was not upset by it. She added that she felt a little sorry for him, but believed it was simply a joke and that people should not take it too seriously. Hull said her main focus was having a good week at the tournament and joked that she would buy him “100 scratch cards” at the end of the week.

She went further when asked if she had any regrets. "No, and people that have complaints about it, I'd say loosen up," she said, per NUCLR Golf's X post on July 31.

Hull also explained she had already switched off social media for the week, not due to the backlash, but as part of her usual tournament routine.

"I don't really have my social media on my phone on tournament weeks," she said. "So, I delete it, and when I go home, I'll add it again."

Hull's 69 placed her in the mix after day one at a course she knows well.

Atthaya Thitikul set the early pace with a 64. Hull has never won a major championship. She has five second-place finishes in majors, including a tie for second at the 2025 Women's British Open at Royal Porthcawl, where she moved to within a shot of the lead on Sunday before Miyu Yamashita pulled clear to win.

Hull arrived at Royal Lytham with a clear goal. "I just want to get over the line and win my first major," she said ahead of the tournament. "Five second-place finishes in majors kind of hurts. I remember looking at the faces [from last year] walking in on the first day and wishing that was me."

Hull reached a career-high world ranking of third in February 2026. Her previous appearance at Royal Lytham came in 2018, when she missed the cut as fellow Englishwoman Georgia Hall won the title. This week marks the 50th staging of the Women's British Open.
