Charley Hull walked onto the fifth green at Dundonald Links with a 15-foot birdie putt on a par-5. She walked off nine shots later. What happened in between is one of the more painful sequences anyone has seen at any level of professional golf.
Hull was playing in the first round of the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open in Troon, Scotland, on Thursday, July 23. She was part of a star group alongside world No. 1 Nelly Korda and defending champion Lottie Woad.
"That could be DE-GREENED," the TV commentator said as Hull's birdie putt broke hard right and rolled off the false front and down into the rough, per Christopher Powers on X.
That was just the beginning.

Her first chip back couldn't get past the false front. The ball rolled straight back to her feet. "I'm losing count now," commentator Richard Kaufman said on the broadcast. "What are we up to, five, six, seven shots?"
The second chip did the same. So did the third. Hull changed clubs between attempts, walking back to her bag and pulling out a new stick. The fourth chip finally got past the slope and settled a few feet short of the hole. She holed the putt from around eight feet. "Wow," Kaufman said. "I don't like using the word 'wow,' but it deserved one there."
Powers posted the full clip on X, calling it "a ridiculous save for 9."
Hull finished the day with a 6-over 78, one birdie, three bogeys and that nine. Korda carded an even-par 72. Woad shot a 2-over 74.
Charley Hull and her season context make the hole even harder to watch
The 30-year-old LPGA golfer is a three-time LPGA Tour winner and one of the game's most recognisable personalities. She came to Dundonald Links as part of a high-profile group on day one.
Before Hull's first putt, a commentator noted: "I don't think there's a flat spot on it. It's one of those greens where it really could go anywhere."
Korda, playing alongside Hull, also hit her second shot long of the green and chipped through it with her third. She chipped 12 feet past the hole and settled for a two-putt bogey.
Hull's four chips couldn't manage what Korda did in one. She signed for a nine and moved on.
