Chicago winters just became a whole lot less painful for golfers, thanks to a project whose overall cost amounts to a whopping $50 million.
This staggering project is underway to build what could be the world's first legitimate full-scale indoor golf course in Oswego, southwest of Chicago.
Megalodome Golf is the organisation constructing this facility, consisting of four climate-controlled domes. Each one is 110 feet tall and covers an area of 270,000 square feet, with a complete nine-hole course and practice area.
Megalodome Golf wants to inaugurate the facility in the fall of 2027.
Besides its impressive design, the facility's three domes will host an Arizona-style course with par-4 holes running 270-280 yards, featuring full swings.
The par 3s will have various challenges, including sand bunkers, water hazards, and desert landscaping, stretching from 100 to 160 yards. The fourth dome will be a practice area that will be available to enthusiasts daily, from 6 a.m. to midnight.
A team from Quebec joined with Montreal's Huxham Golf Design to create a genuine Arizona golf experience. The greens use high-quality artificial turf that rolls like real grass. Rounds take about 90 minutes for nine holes.
Megalodome Golf President Bertrand Quentin has been promoting this as more than just a way to escape winter. He explains how climate control can actually improve the golf experience while addressing Chicago's clear issue, half the year without golf.
The $50M Golf Complex Brings Year-Round Play to Oswego
The Oswego Village Board approved concept plans for this 100-acre site in September 2024.
The plans include an 8,000-square-foot clubhouse and 674 parking spaces, which is double the amount needed for special events and future development.
They're hunting for financing right now. Look for them at the Chicago Golf Show from February 27 to March 1, 2026, as they court investors. Pricing hasn't been announced but will vary by season, with projections of 290,000 visitors annually.
Beyond weekend golfers, developers are targeting partnerships with local schools and community groups, giving high school and college players year-round training to compete with kids in warmer climates.
If Megalodome actually pulls this off, Oswego's going to have something that literally doesn't exist anywhere else on the planet. Imagine working on your game in perfect 72-degree weather while there's a blizzard dumping snow outside. Not the worst way to spend a February afternoon.
If you had a similar facility nearby, how frequently would you visit it?
