From all the souvenirs golfers keep, Collin Morikawa has one that will surprise you: pencils. And now, he's revealed the moment he began collecting them.
Speaking in quick notes shared via tee scripts after Round 1 of the 2026 Genesis Invitational, Collin Morikawa opened up about the meaning behind his long-standing pencil collection.
The seven-time PGA Tour winner revealed the habit started in his junior and college days, where he would collect pencils from courses as mementos of good performances.
"When I turned pro I decided to say ‘s**** that’ and I just started slowly grabbing Augusta National pencils. You know, there's worse places to have pencils. You know, I think Pebble's an amazing golf course, iconic venue and glad to use those pencils until the next one.”
Morikawa’s pencil tradition took on a new chapter after his win at the 2026 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Following the victory, he visited the pro shop to collect a box of Pebble Beach pencils, adding them to his rotation.
Before this, he had relied almost entirely on Augusta National pencils for a long stretch, keeping them as part of his routine during tournaments. “I only used an Augusta pencil, like only.”
Earlier in his career, Morikawa had stored nearly 100 pencils from courses he played as an amateur, but over time, he reduced the collection to 15 that held the most significance.
His new pencil choice puts a spotlight on his recent performance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

At that event, he finished 22-under par with a total of 266, securing a one-shot win over Min Woo Lee.
Consequently, he ended a 28-month gap since his last PGA Tour title at the 2023 ZOZO Championship.
He moved up the leaderboard in the third round after posting a 10-under 62. He then followed with a 67 in the final round to hold his position.
Toward the end of the round, he birdied three of his final four holes, including the par-5 18th, which sealed the outcome. With this win, Morikawa recorded the seventh PGA Tour win of his career.
