County Approval Clears Way for PGA Tour's 3rd Oldest Event, Cowboy Boots Included

Established in 1922, the Valero Texas Open, the third-oldest professional tournament on the PGA Tour, is officially a go. Bexar County commissioners just approved the historic event in San Antonio.
This clears the way for top professionals to compete for a $9.8 million purse and a unique Texas prize: custom cowboy boots.
The event is scheduled to take place from March 30 to April 5, and is expected to feature 132 professionals from around the world competing at The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, with players contesting their share of the $9.8 million purse.
Apart from the prize money, the champion will also receive a pair of Valero Texas Open Cowboy Boots. As per Texas Public Radio, last year's winner Brian Harman has already committed to defending his title in the upcoming 2026 edition.

This year marks the eighth season of a 10-year contract extension between the PGA Tour and Valero Energy Corporation. Under the deal, the tournament remains scheduled for the week before the Masters Tournament.
The tournament has crowned legends like Arnold Palmer and Jordan Spieth.
Valero Texas Open History Includes Winners Across Eras
The Valero Texas Open stands just behind the Western Open (1899) and the Canadian Open (1904).
Furthermore, when considering the U.S. Open (1895), conducted by the USGA, and the PGA Championship (1916), conducted by the PGA of America, it ranks as the sixth-oldest professional tournament.
It also remains the oldest professional golf tournament held in the same city throughout its history. In 2022, the event marked its 100th anniversary.
Brian Harman won the Valero Texas Open on April 6, 2025, finishing at 279 (-9) with a three-stroke margin.
Before Harman, Akshay Bhatia won the title in 2024. Before that, Corey Conners claimed the trophy in 2023, followed by J.J. Spaun in 2022 and Jordan Spieth in 2021.
At the same time, the Valero Texas Open has also produced repeat winners. Arnold Palmer secured three consecutive victories from 1960 to 1962. Later, Justin Leonard added multiple titles in 2000, 2001, and 2007.
Similarly, Corey Conners is among the players with more than one win at the event, having captured the title in 2019 and again in 2023.
