A golf club applying for a building expansion is not unusual. But when the club belongs to the sitting U.S. president, and the addition is not a fairway, the application is anything but routine.

Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., has filed an application to add an 11,330-square-foot ballroom and covered rooftop terrace to its clubhouse.

A Golfweek report published on June 24 stated that the Bedminster Township Land Use Board will discuss an application from Lamington Farm Club LLC, the company that runs Trump National Golf Club on Lamington Road, at its August 13 meeting.

The clubhouse is in a building that once belonged to carmaker John DeLorean.

The project must meet several requirements before it can move ahead. According to Golfweek, a review by Boswell, the township's engineering firm, found that the proposed ballroom expansion would increase sewage flow and require approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Construction cannot begin until the permits are approved, and that process could take between nine and 12 months. The club will also need to build a larger sewage treatment facility near the tennis courts on its property.

A separate Boswell report said the club has not submitted the required yearly stormwater reports for several years, though township records show Lamington Farm has remained current on its property taxes, paying about $94,531 every three months on land valued at roughly $38.49 million.

The application for the Bedminster project comes at a time when Trump's separate ballroom project at the White House is also dealing with legal and financial issues.

According to USA TODAY, Trump has said several times that the East Wing ballroom will cost $400 million.

When the project was first announced in July 2025, he estimated the cost at $200 million. He has also said that private donations will pay for the project.

"This is a gift. This is not gonna be paid for by the taxpayer. That we have a judge that thinks it's a terrible thing, that we're making a gift," Trump said, per USA TODAY.

"He said it's terrible that we're making a gift. It should be paid for by the taxpayer. That's one I've never heard before."

A federal judge issued an injunction in March blocking above-ground construction until the project receives congressional authorization. A federal appeals court later put that ruling on hold. The U.S. Court of Appeals has yet to issue a decision on the Trump administration's appeal.
