"Done That My Whole Career": Brooks Koepka Explains Why He Refuses to Carry a Yardage Book Ahead of PGA Championship

Most tour players treat their yardage book like a security blanket, but Brooks Koepka doesn't even bring one. Heading into the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, the three-time champion isn't about to start.

On Wednesday, the PGA Tour shared the moment on X. In the clip, Koepka and his caddie, Ricky Elliott, are talking about the unusual plan. The clip might have made people laugh, but Koepka was completely serious about his reason.

"I just found myself looking at the yardage book too much," he said. "I'd look at it, and I'd see the bunker, and it looks like it's tucked. And then I look up, and I see what's in front of me. And it's not tucked."

His caddie, Ricky Elliott, backed him up. He said Koepka typically has the club out and is already taking practice swings before the yardage even gets called. "To be totally honest, he usually has the club out before I get the yardage," the caddie said. "So it's not too difficult." Koepka's view is simple. By the time tournament play starts, the course should hold no surprises.

"I should know the golf course by the time you play it," he said. "So there shouldn't be anything that's a surprise. I've pretty much done that my whole career as a professional."

It's an approach built on experience and trust in his own eyes. "You know where the pit is, where you should miss it and where you shouldn't miss it," Koepka said. "Looking at a yardage book isn't going to really do you any good because you already know where it's at."

At Aronimink, that confidence carries extra weight. No active player in the field has more history with this event. The 36-year-old has won the PGA Championship three times, most recently at Oak Hill in 2023.

Brooks Koepka Putter the One with Question Mark that's Heading Into the Week

The yardage book isn't what people are watching this week. It's also his putter.

The American professional golfer has been experimenting with equipment changes ahead of the tournament. He was spotted on the Aronimink practice range trying both Cameron Young's Scotty Cameron putter and a TaylorMade Spider. He ended his equipment partnership with Srixon in late April, with both sides agreeing to conclude the deal immediately.

The numbers show why Brooks Koepka has been making changes. This season, he ranks first on the PGA Tour for approach shots, but he is 149th in putting. Kevin Kisner explained it in a simple way on the Fore Play Podcast.

"His ball-striking is the same level it was when he was winning all the majors," Kisner said. "Just the putting's lagging behind. But if he starts seeing putts going in, he's as dangerous as anyone."

He finished tied for 11th last week at the Myrtle Beach Classic. His game is improving step by step. Now, the only big question is whether his putting will improve at Aronimink Golf Club.
