Golf has been robbed of another bright talent far too early. Canadian pro golfer Matt McQuillan, a PGA Tour player since 2011, passed away on August 5 at age 45 at Kingston General Hospital, leaving family and fans devastated.
"Whether on the course or in everyday life, he [McQuillan] had a remarkable ability to bring people together, offering encouragement, laughter, and genuine friendship to everyone he met," the obituary read.
McQuillan was a native of Kingston, Ontario, and played college golf at Oklahoma State and Georgia. He turned professional in 2003 and began his career on the Canadian Tour before earning PGA Tour status in 2011.
"His welcoming personality and unwavering kindness made him a beloved figure within Kingston's golfing community and beyond," the obituary added.

His best finish came that same year (2011) at the John Deere Classic, where he secured third place. McQuillan began his career on the Canadian Tour before winning the 2005 Telus Edmonton Open by six shots.
According to the PGA Tour website, the veteran golfer competed in 32 PGA Tour events, 23 PGA Tour Canada events, and 11 Korn Ferry Tour events before calling time on his career in 2017.
Following the conclusion of his golfing career, McQuillan returned to Kingston and embraced a new role as a teaching professional. The veteran focused on nurturing young talents, guiding them in the game, and supporting them whenever they felt lost.
In the wake of his passing, his family and friends paid tribute not only to his golfing brilliance but also to the kindness and warmth he showed throughout his life.
Family and friends remember Matt McQuillan’s remarkable journey
From Kingston to golf’s biggest stages, his journey earned him recognition, yet success never changed who he was.
In remembering his legacy, friends and family shared heartfelt tributes on his website, offering a glimpse into the remarkable soul behind the golfer.
“He was so selfless and always willing to offer tips and advice,” a friend shared on McQuillan’s memorial website. “He loved bantering about golf and sharing laughs after each round. He was universally beloved by all the guys in our golf group and enjoyed playing with everyone."
At the club championships, Cataraqui Golf and Country Club honored his memory by placing his golf bag on the first tee, turning the opening hole into a poignant tribute, per golfpost.com.
As he leaves this world, his legacy will live on forever in the hearts of his friends, family, and, of course, his devoted fans.
