Former LIV Golf Winner Says He "Lost Motivation" Despite Early Success

Former LIV Golf Winner Eugenio Chacarra recently shared his opinions on the league, highlighting his grievances. After a lucrative spell with the Saudi-backed, breakaway competition, the Spaniard parted ways at the end of the 2024 season.

Chacarra was one of the best amateur golfers during his time at Oklahoma State University. Upon turning pro, he joined LIV in June 2022.

“Once you win out there (on LIV), as I did, your life doesn’t change that much," he said, as reported by NUCLR GOLF.

In his first season itself, Chacarra secured his first professional title in October 2022. He won the LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok by three strokes over Patrick Reed. His team, Fireballs GC, also won the team title.

"You don’t get into majors, you don’t get a chance to be in the Ryder Cup, you don’t get a chance to play a lot of events. That affected me as a player, and I lost motivation,” he added.

Despite the early success, LIV lost its appeal to Chacarra, and after three seasons, he left the rebel tour.

During his time at LIV, players in the team-based league did not receive world ranking points. This hampered Chacarra’s dream of competing at the majors, as he has played just two in his entire career.

Coupled with that, he endured a few injuries and didn't have his contract renewed with the Fireballs GC. Thus, Chacarra left LIV and began his quest to enter the PGA Tour.

The 26-year-old achieved a monumental win at the Hero Indian Open in March 2025 and secured his place on the DP World Tour. He is currently ranked 127th in the world, way above the 400s at the end of 2024.

Now, through the DP World Tour’s 10 cards initiative, Chacarra aspires to get a PGA Tour card. In his process of doing so, however, he gave up on the opportunity to feature at next month’s U.S. Open.

Why Chacarra Gave Up On The U.S. Open

In the U.S. Open qualifying in Dallas, Chacarra was heading into a sudden-death play-off for one of the two alternate spots at the major.

However, the Spaniard left the premises, not taking part in the final part of the 36-hole qualifier.

"When you fly to Europe, you lose a day, and that was the only chance I had to get there on time to get some rest and practice the course," Chacarra explained on X

His priority was the Soudal Open held in Belgium. Chacarra further mentioned that he wanted to prepare for Belgium. However, the sacrifices did not turn out in his favor. At the Rinkven International GC, Chacarra ended up finishing in a tie for 22nd.

As of now, he stands 18th in the Race to Dubai Rankings and will aim to give his all to earn the PGA Tour card.
