Genesis Invitational Faces Unexpected Issues Only Days Before Tee Off

Feb 17, 2026, 2:10 AM CUT

With two days remaining before tee off, the Genesis Invitational faces uncertainty as weather conditions threaten to disrupt the tournament schedule.

With the Genesis Invitational set to begin on Thursday, a weather update shared by Skratch on X showed rain expected across Los Angeles in the coming days.

The forecast listed a 100% chance of rain today, followed by 95% on Tuesday and 90% on Wednesday, with rain still expected on Thursday.

Skratch also shared an image of Riviera Country Club showing water covering parts of the course, captioned, “A river at Riviera wasn’t on our bingo card this week.”

This raises concerns over course conditions, which could lead to delays or interruptions if rain continues during the tournament.

If rain continues when play begins, the tournament may face stoppages and delays between rounds. Officials could also suspend play or postpone rounds based on course conditions and safety considerations.

At the same time, reduced daylight may add further challenges. Delays combined with limited light could prevent rounds from finishing on schedule, forcing play to continue on the following days.

Beyond scheduling concerns, rain has also affected the course itself, which may influence how players approach the tournament.

Heavy rain at Riviera in January and February has left the course on the greener side, with soft fairways and greens affecting ball movement.

These conditions may benefit players who rely on distance, such as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

Alongside this, wet Kikuyu grass in the rough may make recovery shots harder, increasing the importance of hitting fairways.

This would not be the first weather disruption affecting play during the 2026 season. It has already impacted tournament play, including an event where conditions forced officials to cancel the final round.

Freezing Weather Forces Final-Round Cancellation as Nelly Korda Secures Victory at Lake Nona

Unexpected weather change has been affecting play since the beginning of the season, including at the 2026 Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, where freezing conditions led officials to cancel the final round.

Therefore, Nelly Korda was declared the winner based on her 54-hole score of 13-under par, following her 8-under 64 during Saturday’s round.

Weather played a direct role throughout the tournament at Lake Nona. Temperatures in Orlando dropped to 23°F (-5°C), with wind chill making it feel like 11°F (-11°C).

Officials also reported hardened ground, which affected ball movement and prevented greens from holding shots.

Beyond this, the wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph during the third round caused balls to move on the greens, forcing officials to suspend play.

After further delays and temperatures failing to rise above 40°F, the LPGA cancelled the final round, citing course conditions and safety concerns.
