When you make a debut at a course, you are bound to have telltales from there. 

Similarly, Tiger Woods made his PGA Tour debut at Riviera Country Club in 1992 as a 16-year-old amateur. Even before competing there, Woods had spent time at the venue as a spectator during his childhood, giving him early memories of the course.

During a pre-tournament press conference held Tuesday ahead of the Genesis Invitational, the 15-time major champion recalled one such memory from when he was around eight or nine years old. 

At the time, Woods was not present as a player but as a spectator, watching the professionals. He was standing near the old 8th green when a golf ball landed nearby.

Naturally, curiosity caught him, and he ran over to look at it and noticed it was a Ram golf ball, a brand he did not recognize at the time. As he stood there examining it, a caddie moved him aside, saying, "Kid, get out of the way."

That moment left Woods confused, as he did not recognize the caddie who had pushed him aside. At the time, he was simply a child observing the swings. 

However, he later came to know the identity of the man. As Woods recalled, “I look up, and I don't know who he is at that time, and later find out it was Bruce Edwards caddying for Tom Watson.”

Bruce Edwards served as Tom Watson’s caddie for nearly 30 years, beginning their partnership in 1973.

After turning professional, Woods brought up the incident to Edwards, who responded by saying, “Well, you were in the way.”

While Riviera holds some of Woods’ coolest, earliest memories in golf, his competitive record at the course tells a different story.

Tiger Woods’ Competitive History at Riviera Country Club

Although Riviera Country Club marks the start of Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour journey, he has not recorded a win at the course. 

Despite earning 82 PGA Tour victories, Riviera remains the venue where he has made the most professional appearances without a win, with more than 13 starts.

His association with Riviera began in 1992, when he made his PGA Tour debut at the Nissan Los Angeles Open on a sponsor exemption at age 16. He posted rounds of 72 and 75 and missed the cut by six strokes. 

He returned to compete at the venue in later years and came closest to winning in 1999, when he finished tied for second, two strokes behind Ernie Els.

However, his playoff loss in 1998 did not take place at Riviera, as the event that year was held at Valencia Country Club while Riviera was being prepared for the U.S. Senior Open. 

Beyond competing, Woods also became involved in the event’s operations. In 2017, his company, TGR Live, took over management of the tournament, and he was later named the official host in 2020. 

The tournament now also serves as a platform to support his TGR Foundation.
