Golf Community Reacts to Polarizing Iron Cover Question: 'Not on the Course'

Golfers often have strong opinions about the small details of the game. One of the quickest ways to spark a reaction on a practice range is the sight of iron covers moving from bag to bag.

Many players recognize the moment. A glance. A quiet assumption that the person using them must be new to golf.

Interestingly, other clubs do not draw the same response. Drivers come with covers. Putters are protected as well. Fairway woods and hybrids rarely raise questions.

Iron covers, however, seem to sit in a different category within the sport.

But what is the reason behind hating the iron covers on the course? Well, iron covers slow down the game as golfers take it off and wrestle it back on in between the holes.

Another reason is that the iron covers can actually damage your clubs. It traps moisture against the metal, which can lead to rust spots. However, some golfers openly use the covers.

Take Aaron Rai, for example. On tour, Rai stands out for two habits: wearing two black gloves and carrying a full set of iron covers in his bag.

Over the years, those covers have drawn attention and comments from golfers who question whether they belong on a course. Rai has heard those reactions before. But when he explained the reason behind them, the discussion took a different direction.

During an appearance on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, Rai spoke about his upbringing and the role his father played in his golf journey. His father paid for equipment, memberships, and tournament entries even when it was difficult to do so.

The discussion spread among golfers, as NUCLR GOLF posted “Iron covers should be banned…🏌️🪧Do you agree?” on X yesterday. Fans quickly began sharing their own views on iron covers, offering a mix of personal habits and opinions about using them on the course.

Golf Fans Split Over Iron Covers on the Course

As the discussion moved online, golfers began sharing their own routines and opinions about iron covers.

Some players supported the idea and explained why they continue to use them. One wrote, “I don’t understand the hate for Iron Covers. Every time I take a club out of the bag, the cover goes in my pocket. Helps me from leaving clubs behind.”

Another commented, “Oh no, you’re not!!! If I’m gonna pay $1,200 for a set of Titleist T350 irons, I’m gonna put covers on them to protect them so they don’t get dinged up!!!”

Others pointed to maintenance and noise as reasons for using them. One user shared, “No, it keeps my forged clubs looking brand new, not to mention quieter with no rattling noises.”

At the same time, some golfers said they prefer not to use them during a round. One fan wrote, “I use them for travel but not on the course.” Another added, “I remove them all before a round and leave them in the car. I just use them to transport my clubs to and from the course.”
