"Golf Is a Global Game": Sergio Garcia Explains Why the Sport Should Expand Beyond Traditional Markets

via Usta

Sergio Garcia has played golf in many countries around the world. Even now, he still enjoys visiting new places, and he believes that is one of the best parts of golf.

Garcia, the captain of Fireballs GC and the 2017 Masters champion, highlighted golf expanding into new regions and audiences around the world and the importance of the expansion.

"I think golf is a global game, and that's where we try to take it," Garcia said as reported by Golf Magic on June 10. "One of the key things we do at LIV is travel to many different parts of the world and give countries that don't always get to see a lot of golf, or many big-name players, the opportunity to experience it."

His statement came right before the International Series Morocco presented by Visit Morocco. The tournament will take place from June 11 to 14 at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam. It will be Garcia's seventh time playing in the International Series and his first-ever visit to Morocco.

Garcia has been one of professional golf's most well-traveled players for more than two decades. His belief in taking the game to new markets goes beyond a talking point. It is a view he has held consistently as LIV Golf has built its international schedule.

"I think it's important to try to be in as many places as possible," he said. "Morocco, the Middle East, and Asia are big markets, and we're happy to try to do our part there."

The Asian Tour's International Series has eight tournaments in 2026, and each one is played in a different country. This week's event includes 18 LIV Golf players, including Fireballs GC captain Bubba Watson.

Garcia also said that the International Series helps young golfers improve and grow in the sport. He mentioned his Fireballs GC teammate Josele Ballester, who won his first professional tournament at last year's PIF Saudi International and finished tied for third at the Singapore Open earlier this season.

Meanwhile, Garcia arrives at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in form and with a new caddie on the bag.

Garcia's regular caddie, Benjamin Thompson, is not on the bag this week. His wife, Angela, is taking on caddie duties for the first time at a professional event.

"It's great to be here with my wife, Angela," Garcia said, per Golf Magic. "She's going to be caddying for me this week, so that's going to be a fun experience for both of us."

The couple played nine holes together on the eve of the tournament. Garcia came away with a positive impression of the course.

"The greens are very tricky with a lot of movement on them, but it's a beautiful-looking golf course," he said. "We're excited to see a new culture and experience it."

Garcia arrives in Morocco in good form. He finished runner-up at LIV Golf Virginia in May and placed fourth at LIV Golf Andalucia last week. He is a five-time Asian Tour winner heading into his seventh International Series start.
