Golf Has a New Media Giant, and It's Versant: All You Need to Know About It

Golf Channel's ownership underwent a significant change, with Versant now operating as a separate, publicly traded company, independent of NBC Sports' parent organization, Comcast.

Comcast spun off its cable empire, giving birth to Versant in early January 2026. Tucked inside that $7 billion portfolio are Golf Channel, USA Network, and a sports division that offers over 10,000 hours of live programming each year.

For golf fans, this isn't just corporate shuffling. It's the dawn of a media powerhouse that'll control how you watch the U.S. Open, PGA Tour events, and everything in between.

However, Versant isn't separating entirely from NBC, as the companies are jointly pushing for an extension of their R&A media rights, which also include the Open Championship.

Speaking to Front Office Sports at the PGA at the beginning of January, the Versant EVP of golf, Tom Knapp, expressed his openness towards working with NBC. He said, "We were together as one company for many, many years. So, we know how to work together, very comfortable with them."

But now that NBC and Versant aren't together anymore, Knapp also highlighted the flip side of the coin.

Versant Evp Emphasized Independent Mutual Growth for Both Organisations

Now that Versant is no longer under NBC, the organisation's sustainability depends largely on independent growth. However, drawing a link to his previous comments about NBC, Knopp stressed the need for independent mutual growth.

He said, "But we both have to be prepared that we will negotiate independently, and like a lot of other sports properties, folks partner up to make it work. We may do that. We’d love to continue to do it, to renew an R&A deal and be partnered with NBC, but it’s impossible to tell how that’s going to go."

Versant CEO, Mark Lazarus, also expressed a similar opinion about the organisation at its launch. He said, "As a standalone company, we enter the market with the scale, strategy, and leadership to grow and change our business model."

All in all, the entire situation indicates that Golf isn't going anywhere. It's simply getting a new owner with big plans and even bigger ambitions.

What changes are you expecting after this change in the Golf Channel's governing structure?
