While Tiger Woods will be missing an entire major season for the second year in a row, his namesake, 23-year-old Tiger Christensen, secured a spot at The Open and will make his second appearance later this month.

At West Lancashire, Christensen, kitted out in a red polo shirt, delivered a solid performance that earned him a T2 finish and one of the five qualifying spots at Royal Birkdale. However, it didn’t come easily.

“It’s just a crazy day of golf. It’s the toughest grind mentally ever. The day is unbelievably long. You try to keep control of your thoughts, and at the end of the day you come in, and you either make it or you don’t. You either leave with happiness or heartbreak,” Christensen said in an interview with Bunkered.

Christensen started strong, shooting eight-under-par through 11 holes in the first round. He eventually carded a seven-under 65 and was in strong contention at the halfway stage, as reported by Josh Lees of Bunkered.

“I started really well, and I felt like I really just needed to play solid for the rest of the day. I didn’t really have to do anything special anymore,” he said.

Christensen carded a 2-under 70 in the second round to finish T2 at 9-under overall, comfortably securing one of the five qualifying spots available at West Lancashire. Fittingly, the 23-year-old was named after Tiger Woods.

“My parents started watching golf a little before I was born, and they just thought the name was cool and they couldn’t figure out what to name me,” he added.

The youngster will now look forward to his second Open start, but with a different perspective this time around.

Christensen on having different goals for his second appearance

Christensen was no stranger to Final Qualifying at West Lancashire, having earned his Open debut at Royal Liverpool through the same venue in 2023.

“It’s going to be interesting to be there a second time. I remember everything seemed huge and big and unbelievable and I’m probably going to do a few things different in the prep this year, with practice rounds. This time, I think the goals are going to be a little different. To actually appreciate that you can play well at The Open, too,” said Christensen in the same interview.

On his debut, the German had missed the cut. Now, with added experience and confidence, Christensen will head to Royal Birkdale.

The HotelPlanner Tour pro will look to make his mark on the big stage in his second major appearance.
