Good Enough to Reject Division I College Offer, Yet This LPGA Star Was Never Well-Known in High School and Here’s Why

She started playing golf at the age of 5, qualified for the US Women's Open at just 14, and won the Faldo Series Grand Final in 2013 and 2014. Yet this LPGA star still managed to keep it under wraps during her high school.

While that might sound impossible, Megan Khang managed to do it. Speaking on THE SCOOP by Golf.com in October, Megan Khang said, “I never really told anyone what level of golf I played.”

Her best friend from high school only saw her play for the first time at the FM Championship 2024, when she was 26, reacting, reacting, “Dude, you’re pretty good at this.” Despite knowing each other since they were nine or ten, the LPGA Pro said she kept to herself, didn’t play on her high school team, and often missed more school than allowed for tournaments.

She recalled that the first real realization came only when colleges began calling, saying, “one school had called my high school, and I got called to my guidance counselor’s office, and they were like, ‘You got to commit,’” even though she declined because it wasn’t the right fit.

Only then did teachers start to understand her level, later asking why the LPGA pro never told them she was good, to which Megan Khang replied, “My dad said I was okay.”

Megan Khang’s decision to bypass college and turn professional came during the summer after her senior year of high school. While on an official visit to Wake Forest, she met head coach  Dianne Dailey and assistant coach Kevin Diaz.

She later recalled that Diaz, whose wife Laura Diaz played on the LPGA Tour, told her, “Honestly, if my wife plays on tour, like I definitely think you can make it out there.”

Shortly after, while driving to the final stage of Q-School in Florida with her father, she made a “spur of the moment” decision to turn pro and pursue an LPGA Tour card.

Khang earned her LPGA Tour card in 2015 at the age of 17 after finishing T6 at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, which secured her LPGA Tour membership for the 2016 season.
