The Green Jacket isn’t just clothing, it’s a symbol of mastery, pride, and a tradition few golfers ever touch. Some champions guard it closely, but Rory McIlroy let his wander this year, showing it off in the most unexpected moments. And one stop, in particular, caught everyone off guard.
Rory McIlroy hasn’t worn his green jacket as often as he imagined he would. But every time he has taken it out this year, it has come with a story, and in one case, a bit of history. “Uh, not as often as I thought I would,” he admitted while in talks with FOX Sports Australia. When asked how frequently he breaks it out. “I thought I’d never take it off, but… it becomes normal.”
The jacket has made its way to some memorable places. One of the most recent stops came overseas. “I wore it in Abu Dhabi a couple of weeks ago,” Rory said, noting that the Middle East trip was one of the rare times he slipped the jacket back on beyond the ceremonial photo ops.
Another standout moment happened at home during Halloween. His daughter Poppy wanted to dress up as Glinda from Wicked, which gave Rory the perfect role. “My daughter Poppy wanted to be Galinda from Wicked, so I was the Wizard of Oz, and he wears a green jacket, so I thought it was appropriate.” Golf’s most famous jacket became part of the family costume, a Masters trophy turned trick-or-treat ensemble.

And beyond Abu Dhabi and Halloween, Rory also made history this year by becoming the first-ever Masters Champion to bring the Green Jacket to India, marking a milestone moment for fans there and adding another unique chapter to the jacket’s journey.
Even if he doesn’t reach for it often, Rory admits the jacket still means something every time he puts it on. “It’s always a nice excuse to put it back on.” But while the jacket has traveled far this year, the moments behind the scenes reveal an entirely different side of what it means to wear it. A side most fans never get to see.
The Other Side of Green Jacket Glory
For most fans, the Green Jacket is pure magic, a symbol of golf’s biggest dream coming true. So when a Masters champion shows up anywhere, people expect to see it. Rory McIlroy understands that pressure well. “You know, the people want to see the green jacket, so you bring the green jacket with you,” he said.
But what fans don’t see is the strange mix of pride and responsibility that comes with it. “Sometimes you don’t want to wear it…” he admitted, explaining how even this iconic piece can feel overwhelming.
He recalled one moment in particular: “I sort of complained about wearing it in Abu Dhabi,” Rory said. His wife, Erica, didn’t let that slide. “If you ever hear me complain about wearing this thing again… punch me or do something, because I’ve waited my whole life to wear this.”
Rory’s journey with the Green Jacket this year proves that even the greatest symbols in sports carry their own pressures, joys, and unexpected moments.
So here’s the real question: is glory defined by where you take it or by how it changes you along the way?
