Stephen Gallacher believes Aaron Rai is a perfect Ryder Cup fit. The Englishman's win at Aronimink has sparked global praise and comparisons to legendary European captains.

Featuring at the ISPS Handa Senior Open being held at Gleneagles, Gallacher firmly believed that the Wanamaker Trophy holder would be a great addition to the European Ryder Cup team.

“Why would you not want to play with someone of his temperament? You know he's such a nice guy and you'd want to play with a major winner as your partner, wouldn't you? You know he's got the minerals down the stretch and he's very methodical, like JD, we've both played with him quite a bit,” said Gallacher.

“He's got his own way, he's set in his own ways, he's methodical and he does stuff a bit uniquely,” he added.

Gallacher was also fond of Rai’s personality. He noted Rai's ability to stay balanced both on and off the course.

Rai shot a brilliant final-round 5-under 65 at the PGA Championship to secure a three-stroke win over Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley, becoming the first Englishman to win the major in the stroke-play era since Jim Barnes.

“But I think Luke Donald, he's similar to Luke, to be honest. He's kind of like what Luke is like. Very unassuming, very humble. He's just a straightforward guy and a h*** of a player. We've all known he's a good player, but when you win tournaments like that, that takes you up another level,” said Gallacher.

Gallacher was impressed with Rai’s handling of his emotions at the 17th hole of the final round. It was one of the highlights of the tournament as Rai nailed a 68-foot putt.

Rai birdied the 17th hole, and the putt became the second-longest made during the championship weekend. Gallacher labeled Rai as “level-headed,” just like the top players in the game.

Not only Gallacher, but also the 1988 PGA Championship winner praised Rai’s demeanor at Aronimink.

American veteran golfer Jeff Sluman’s first PGA Tour title was the Wanamaker Trophy back in 1988. He shot 12-under par and registered a three-stroke victory over compatriot Paul Azinger.

“He just had total control. He understood the golf course better than anybody that day, what to do. And, you know, sometimes there is that intuitive feel for a certain day that you have, and he showed me exactly what he's made of, and, you know, let's stand up and be counted at this point. And he was counted, that's for sure,” said Sluman in an interview on May 20.

Sluman further said that he saw himself in Aaron Rai and particularly liked his steadiness and shot selection.

Both Sluman and Rai won the Wanamaker Trophy at around the same age and displayed immense character to secure their first major.

Eknoor Juneja 2026 PGA Championship Recap: Aaron Rai’s Win and Notable Storylines
Aaron Rai lifted the Wanamaker Trophy and ended England’s 107-year wait in style. The week at Aronimink had everything from a late no-show by Garrick Higgo to plenty of drama, surprises, and pure fun. It was a championship packed with memorable moments and big talking points. Here is a closer look at the biggest storylines that made it special. Bill Streicher-Imagn Images
Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for 7th place after shooting a final-round 69. He spoke to reporters in the clubhouse immediately after Rai secured the title. McIlroy stated that nobody on the property would be unhappy about Rai winning. Multiple players on the leaderboard expressed admiration for Rai after the final round concluded. Xander Schauffele finished three shots behind Rai and praised his personality to the media. Jon Rahm finished tied for 2nd place and noted that he only hears positive comments regarding Rai from people on the PGA Tour. These statements went beyond standard post-round etiquette and served as real endorsements of Rai's everyday behavior. David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire/Imago
McIlroy emphasized that the entire golf community felt pleased with the tournament outcome. This reaction is uncommon in professional sports because players usually express disappointment when they lose a major tournament. McIlroy has pursued another major championship since 2014, yet he offered this praise without any hesitation. The locker room sentiment at Aronimink showed that Rai has strong relationships with his competitors. Golfers on the PGA Tour rarely celebrate losing a tournament, especially when a major title is at stake. The positive feedback from the field indicates that Rai's reputation is genuine and consistent. His peers respect him enough that his victory helped ease the disappointment of their own defeats. Schauffele spoke about Rai's intense work ethic after the tournament ended. He described Rai as a top gentleman and a very good person. Schauffele won the PGA Championship in 2024 and understands the effort required to win a major tournament. He chose to celebrate Rai's achievement rather than focus on his own performance, which shows how much he respects Rai's approach to golf. Brenton Tse/ZUMA Press Wire/Imago
Rahm admitted that he has not spent a large amount of time around Rai during his career. He explained that he constantly hears peers share stories about Rai being exceptionally kind. This reputation grew through brief encounters and secondhand accounts from other players. A positive reputation among rivals requires consistent professional behavior over a long period. Rai's behavior creates a distinct environment on the PGA Tour. Professional athletes usually view their rivals with intense focus and distant competition. Rai breaks this pattern by maintaining humility and kindness while competing at the highest level of the sport. This dynamic alters the competitive atmosphere and makes his victories feel acceptable to the players he defeats. Bill Streicher-Imagn Images
Rai spoke to reporters about his reputation and credited his family for his values. He explained that his mother and siblings always reminded him to be a good person outside of golf. Rai also stated that golf is a humbling sport that requires discipline. He believes that the difficulties of the game match the humble principles taught by his parents. James Lang-Imagn Images
Rai grew up in England as the son of an Indian father and a Kenyan mother. His father left his job to help Rai play golf, and his mother worked 2 jobs to support the family. Rai used to watch videotapes of Tiger Woods until the tapes became worn out. When his parents saved enough money to buy him irons, Rai put plastic covers on the clubs to protect them. He still uses iron covers today to remember his family's sacrifices. James Lang-Imagn Images
Rai's victory placed his name on the Wanamaker Trophy alongside Tiger Woods, whom he idolized as a child. Rai mentioned that he grew up watching Woods in complete awe and finds it incredible to share space on the trophy. The reactions from his peers prove that a golfer can win a major title without being ruthless. Rai earned a major championship and the genuine admiration of the entire golf world at the same time.
