Henrik Stenson’s European Redemption Starts 3 Years After His Ryder Cup Captaincy Ouster

When Henrik Stenson debuted on the LIV tour, winning the LIV Golf Bedminster in July 2022, he instantly established himself as one of LIV’s standout golfers. But unfortunately, just after four seasons with LIV, the 49-year-old lost his spot when he finished 52nd in LIV points this year. Yet, just like he had pivoted three years ago, Sentson’s plans of playing in Europe are far from over!
Back in July 2022, the European Tour and Ryder Cup Europe stripped Stenson of his captaincy, within two months of the announcement in March. The reason? His decision to join LIV. But now things have come full circle as the 2016 Open champion looks set to return to his old domain next season with the DP World Tour.
As per a report from Bunkered just a few hours ago, Henrik Stenson is “plotting his return” to the European game and taking concrete steps to achieve it. The UK news outlet reported that Senson settled over £1 million ($13,14,875) in fines with the DP World tour to get one step closer to regaining his membership. Later, Golf Monthly backed it up, claiming DP World had confirmed the claim.
So while Stenson had the opportunity to participate in LIV events come January and attempt to regain his membership, he seems to be going back to the DP World Tour. It’s an interesting development considering Stenson followed the likes of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and others and resigned from the DP World tour in 2023 after they won a Sport Resolutions Panel hearing against LIV Golfers.
By that point, the former Open champion had played in just two DP World Tour events since losing his Ryder Cup Captaincy. Stenson played in the 2023 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the Dubai Desert Classic the following week, where he finished in T8. Then again, this move may not be surprising for a man who has always found a way to adapt and bounce back from adversity.
“Over the course of a career, you’re going to have good years, you’re going to have bad years,” the veteran golfer said after finishing in the LIV Drop Zone and getting dropped as co-captain for the Majesticks. It’s also no secret that the Swede hoped for a better resolution to how things ended with the PGA and DP World tour back in 2022.

Henrik Stenson opened up about how he felt in 2023 as well. “I’m just disappointed that with everything that came out, because there was a big willingness on my part to sit down and talk long before this thing got to where it got to,” he said two years ago. While three years have passed, that conversion seems to have finally happened, and Stenson’s European redemption looks imminent.
