“I Had Serious Doubts”: How Tiger Woods Battled Uncertainty at the 2019 Masters

Mar 25, 2026, 4:30 PM CUT

“I had serious doubts after what transpired a couple years ago.” That wasn’t doubt about winning. It was doubt about whether Tiger Woods could function at all.

Before the 2019 Masters, his career was at a low point. He had multiple back surgeries which made even basic movement difficult, and any real chance of competing again seemed unlikely.

That is what made Augusta in 2019 stand out. It was not dominance, but staying in control when it mattered.

Woods did not dominate the field. He stayed steady while others slipped, and when mistakes came on Sunday, he avoided them, finishing with a 70 to reach 13-under and win by a single shot.

The numbers mattered, but the context mattered more. It was his fifth Masters title, his 15th major, and his first in 11 years. A comeback many had already ruled out was complete.

The moment went beyond the result.

“This has meant so much to me and my family… to have everyone here, it’s something I’ll never, ever forget,” Woods said.

Years after celebrating at Augusta with his father, Woods walked off the 18th green to his children. That is the real payoff. Not dominance, not legacy talk, but presence.

At the Masters Tournament, it wasn’t about proving anything to the world. It was about proving it to himself. Now, 2026 awaits.

Tiger Woods’ Masters 2026 Status Remains Uncertain as Recovery Race Continues

Woods is dealing with a different reality as the 2026 Masters approaches. The question now is whether he can physically compete.

His body has taken more damage since 2019. Surgeries and a torn Achilles have limited his schedule and he is still recovering. He has been open about it, the process is slow, and the demands of top-level golf have not changed.

Augusta still stands apart. If there is one event he would push for, it is this one. Experience and course knowledge can compensate, but only to a point.

Because the Masters is not just about skill. It demands four days of sustained physical effort.

At this stage, making the cut would already be significant. Going further depends less on form and more on whether his body can hold up across four demanding days.

In 2019, Woods answered the question of whether he could return. In 2026, the question is simpler and harder.

Whether he can last.
