"I Never Play That Great:" John Daly Reflects While Talking Strategies at PNC Championship

With Team Daly in second position behind Team Kuchar at the PNC Championship in the leaderboard, John Daly made it clear where the real strength of the team lies.

When asked about the mindset heading into the final round, Daly summed it up in his own unmistakable way. “He’s the horse and the saddle. That’s all there is to it,” Daly said.

That balance was evident in how Daly broke down the round. Team Daly didn’t start fast, sitting at even par through two holes before momentum shifted.

“We were even par after two, and the Kuchars got hot quick and we kind of fed off them a little bit,” Daly said after the opening round, as per TenGolf. “It was just one of those great days, good ball striking.”

The numbers backed it up. Team Daly capitalized on the scramble format and finished the round at 13-under 59. Daly, meanwhile, stayed blunt about his own contribution: "He played great. I never really play that great, but that’s all right in my life right now."

Even the missed opportunities came with praise attached. Daly noted that a few better reads on the greens could have pushed the score lower. Jr.’s response?

Well, Daly junior's response matched the tone. “No, he hit it good,” Daly II said. “Just a few putts that were close to going in. But hit wedges close tomorrow and have some more fun.” But this is not the first time senior Daly has praised his son.

John Daly’s Support Reflects His Son’s Continued Progress

John Daly has always been there for his son, Daly Jr., like any other father. Even in April 2025, Daly II earned SEC Golfer of the Week honors while representing the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. John Daly was quick to take to social media after his son's achievement. "Proud of you, son! #woopigsooie," he wrote on his story while resharing the Arkansas Razorbacks Golf Team’s Instagram post.

Daly has consistently highlighted his son’s game, most notably during their appearance at the 2022 PNC Championship. The father-son duo posted a remarkable 57, highlighted by 13 birdies and an eagle.

“He doesn’t go quite past parallel like his pops, but if you look at his balance, the balance is unbelievable,” Daly said, breaking down his son’s swing mechanics. He also credited Daly II’s strength and added that their performance as a team was due to Daly Jr.'s efforts.

“I hit a couple of drives and some really good wedges, but it was really all him,” Daly said. What are your thoughts about how Team Daly played? Do tell us in the comments.
