Brooks Koepka has won some of the biggest tournaments in golf, but when asked about his early memories of the game, the golf superstar revealed that early defeats, not victories, shaped his career.

On 22 Feb 2024, Brooks Koepka appeared in an interview with Golf.com, which was published on the official YouTube channel. Asked if he remembered the first tournament he ever won, Koepka surprised many with his honesty.

"I remember more the ones where I lost. I remember coming home crying to my dad. My dad was like, ‘What are you doing? Play better.’" said the golfer.

"The wins are kind of a blur. It all happens so fast," he explained. "But the losses, if you learn from them the right way, you can learn a lot more. They’ll keep you awake at night, too," he added. Koepka has won many major championships, including 9 PGA Tour titles, and is one of the most dominant players of his generation.

That mindset helped him translate his hard work into results. Koeppa is among the very few golfers of the current era to have successfully defended his major titles more than once. 

“Oh, without a doubt, not even close,” he admitted when asked if losses offer more takeaways than wins. “When you lose, you’re like, ‘Why?’ You start searching more.”

How Reflection Shaped Koepka’s Biggest Wins

Brooks Koepka has always focussed to learn from his losses, or bad shots rather than from celebrating wins, and his results reflect that. How, you may ask? Well, his first major came at the 2017 U.S. Open, and instead of treating it as a peak, he doubled down and defended the title a year later. That mindset resurfaced at the PGA Championship.

Koepka won in 2018, then came back the next year and defended the title. “Oh, without a doubt, not even close,” Koepka said when asked in the same interview if losses offer more takeaways than wins.

"Wins are great, but you don’t really realize your mistakes. When you lose, you’re asking why, and you end up searching a little more," Brooks Koepka added.

In 2023, Koepka once again clinched the PGA Championship and thus, further extended a career tally that boasts nine PGA Tour titles, five LIV Golf triumphs, and being a member of the victorious U.S. Ryder Cup team.

So, although Koepka has stepped away from the game for now, based on his confession, he'll probably reflect on the poor season leading up to his split with LIV Golf, before making a comeback.
