Viktor Hovland came out on top at the Travelers Championship after a thrilling sudden-death playoff against World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The victory was even more special for the Norwegian, as his mother, Galina, was there to watch him lift the trophy.

As Scheffler failed to make a 4-foot putt on the first playoff hole, Hovland sank a 6 1/2-foot birdie putt to secure his eighth PGA Tour title. Fortunately, his mom was present to share the moment with him.

“Yeah. I thought about that earlier in the week. My dad still hasn't watched me win. But at least I'm glad my Mom got to be here, and we get to share this moment together. And yeah, couldn't be happier,” said Hovland in a video shared by the Golf Channel on X.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Hovland, who was able to celebrate one of the biggest wins of his season alongside his mother.

It was a hard-fought win for the 28-year-old, who erased a two-shot deficit on the back nine Sunday before capitalizing on Scheffler's missed putt on the first playoff hole.

Along with his mother, a group of Norwegian fans who had been in Boston for the FIFA World Cup were loud in their support for Hovland.

After the win, Hovland reflected on the challenge of going head-to-head with the World No. 1 in the playoff.

“Yeah, it's been stressful, but yeah, it's unbelievable, especially after Scottie hits it so close they on. Into it was yeah. I knew I had to bring him my best to have a chance to beat him, and he certainly brought it out of me, and I couldn't be happier,” he added.

The 28-year-old acknowledged that Scheffler brought the best out of him.

His performance also drew a strong response from Scheffler, who has been struggling to cross the line this season.

Scheffler had his say on Hovland

At TPC River Highlands, Scheffler and Hovland went down to the wire in the battle for the title. However, the World No. 1 fell short but made sure to fully appreciate his rival.

“He’s a guy that has a lot of talent and works really hard. So those are the types of guys you like to see have success,” said Scheffler, as reported by Tom Rostance of BBC.

Scheffler, who recorded his fourth runner-up finish of the season and is still chasing his first win since The American Express in January, pointed to Hovland's ball-striking as one of his greatest strengths.

“I’ve been playing golf with Viktor for a long time. We’ve had some good battles in college and out here as a pro. He has so much talent. He hits the ball so solidly,” he added.

Scheffler can still turn his season around with a win at Royal Birkdale, which is hosting this year's Open Championship.
