“I’m Never Going to Get There”: Scottie Scheffler on Golf’s Endless Pursuit of Greatness

Scottie Scheffler doesn't believe that numbers, trophies, or rankings, make a golfer "good" in the game; in fact, he has no idea about the criteria that would make a good golfer.
The world No. 1 appeared in the Genesis Invitational pre-event press conference on February 18, where he was asked what makes a golfer a "good" one for him. Scheffler had a chuckle after listening to the question.
Thereafter, he confessed, "I have no idea. I have no idea." However, the 29-year-old has a philosophy behind possessing such a viewpoint. Scheffler stated, "I think that’s why we keep practicing. You never get to a place where you feel like you’ve got it figured out. I always like practicing and trying to improve and creating new shots."
Statistically, he has been at the top of the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, which is a metric that most people consider the purest indicator of excellent ball-striking. But that’s not where his mind goes.
“I think golf is kind of the endless pursuit of trying to figure something out, and I’m never going to get there, but there’s no harm in trying,” Scheffler further added. But what’s ahead for him?
What’s Next for Scottie Scheffler?
Scheffler now turns his focus to the upcoming 2026 major season, during which he wants to not only defend his major title but also add to his already brilliant major tally.
Having won several Masters titles and the Olympic gold medal in 2024, the bar is set ridiculously high; however, his responses imply that his motivation is not to win more trophies but to become the best version of himself on the golf course.
The PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and the Open Championship are just around the corner, and Scheffler goes into each with that same old attitude: just one round at a time, one little change at a time.
He said it himself, if we use his words as a guide, he won't be really happy with his past success. In fact, he'll be thinking about the next step of the chase, not the final accomplishment.
