“I’m Not a Fan of Golf at All, but…”: Noel Gallagher Opens Up on Watching Rory McIlroy and Pep Guardiola

Musician Noel Gallagher recently witnessed a rare crossover between Manchester City's former manager Pep Guardiola and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy. Despite his own disinterest in golf, the rockstar was captivated by their intense discussion regarding the mental toughness required at the Etihad campus.

Gallagher and Guardiola share a special bond. One time during lunch at the Etihad campus, they both came across McIlroy, and Guardiola went straight into interview mode upon seeing the PGA Tour pro.

“I think he is into body language and the mindset and how people carry themselves. I’m not a fan of golf at all, but it was fascinating to see the two of them talk about golf and the mental side of it,” said Gallagher.

Guardiola has long made his obsession with golf known. While his team was on the verge of becoming Premier League champions back in 2018, Guardiola was only focused on his golf score.

In the same year, Guardiola featured alongside Tommy Fleetwood at the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am. The Spaniard played off a handicap of 12 and was full of praise for his partner.

“I’ve been to lunch with him and he was going on about golf that day and he had a go at me about not playing golf,” Gallagher said about Guardiola back in 2023.

In 2023, he even had a go at McIlroy’s club, stating that he'd rather play golf than manage Manchester United.

Back-to-back Masters champion McIlroy has often spoken about the benefits of working out and has credited it for his longevity.

However, the mental side of golf is what fascinates most, and Guardiola talked about it in detail a few years back.

Pep Guardiola On The Mental Side Of Golf

Guardiola frequently draws parallels between the mental demands of soccer and golf.

“You compete with yourself, and of course I think it is a mentally tough, tough game,” said Guardiola back in 2018.

Some of the greats in the game, like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, and also McIlroy, have frequently emphasized the importance of mental fortitude while playing in an event.

Guardiola further went on to state that managers from different sports should learn from golf about the need to be present and to have a positive outlook at all times while competing.

Gallagher might not be a fan of the sport, but even he couldn’t deny that golf has its own beauty, and its mental side is worth the praise.
