Inside Rory McIlroy’s Dream Home in Ireland That He Reluctantly Had to Give Up

Imagine being one of the most decorated golfers of your generation, No. 2 on the PGA's Career Money Leaders list, and still having to let go of the first home you ever bought. Yet that's exactly the decision Rory McIlroy had to make. In 2012, the four-time major champion had to put up his mansion in Northern Ireland, which was his first real stamp of success, for sale.
The property sat on 14 acres and carried a price tag of roughly £2 million (about $2.5 million at the time). It was built for a golfer. Golf Digest reported that the property consists of five bedrooms, five reception rooms, a state-of-the-art entertainment suite, a full gym, a private golf course, a natural pond, and even a waterproof tennis court. It was the kind of place that made sense for a young star grinding toward his first majors.
Reason Behind the Move
Over time, the reality of McIlroy’s schedule changed. As he travelled more for PGA Tour events and major championships, the house became a place he visited only occasionally. By 2013, it made little sense to keep a property he rarely used. So, Rory McIlroy decided to sell it and shift his main base to Florida, where most of the Tour’s top players lived and trained.

The buyer was Gary McCausland, a property developer and TV presenter. He called the estate “an amazing place,” as per the BBC, and praised the uniqueness of the golf facilities. Although the asking price was £2 million, McCausland later said he paid slightly less, without disclosing the final amount, according to the Irish Star.
Rory McIlroy Current Residence
Rory McIlroy now lives in a mansion in Jupiter, Florida, inside the Bear’s Club (previously owned by Ernie Els), one of the most exclusive golf communities in the state. He bought the property for about $11 million, and its value has since reportedly doubled to $22 million.
The estate sits on 2.4 acres and spreads across roughly 13,000 square feet. With amenities reflecting exactly what you’d expect from a high-profile athlete’s home. It was built in 2002 and is about a 90-minute drive north of Miami.
For Rory McIlroy, it’s more than a luxury purchase; it’s become his long-term base during the PGA Tour season and the centre of his life.
