“It Emotionally Struck Me One Day”: Bryson DeChambeau Reflects on Ben Hogan’s Impact

Bryson DeChambeau has idolized Ben Hogan since his early teens. Hogan turned professional in 1930, decades before DeChambeau was born, yet the impact of Hogan’s swing reached him through an old video.

Speaking to Flushing It Golf on December 26, 2025, about what attracted him to Ben Hogan, DeChambeau said,

“It was his golf swing on YouTube. I'll never forget this YouTube video that had some beautiful music playing behind it. It was really intense.”

Before turning Pro, Ben Hogan was a caddie around the age of 11 in Fort Worth, Texas, which allowed him to gain course knowledge.

DeChambeau recalled how the soundtrack and visuals only increased the impact of that video, adding,

“This music from Blood Diamond, the movie with a compilation of Ben Hogan’s golf swings, and it emotionally struck me in a way that I can still feel today.”

But success wasn’t an easy path for Hogan during the 1930s. Ben Hogan worked his way through the PGA Tour with limited results and inconsistent earnings, which raised doubts about his future in the sport.

Instead of stepping away, Hogan examined his technique and made deliberate changes to his swing.

What fascinated DeChambeau about Hogan, “Just a beauty behind it and this mysteriousness about how good he hit it, and just everybody talking about how good a ball striker he was, and if he could just putt, he would have won everything and been the best golfer of all time.”

When did the ‘Hogan Slam’ happen

As the 1940s began, Hogan’s efforts started to show in his performances, and his progress became visible across the tour.

The year 1953 marked a career-shaping phase in Ben Hogan’s career. That season, Hogan won three major championships: the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the Open Championship, which was also his only appearance in the event, and the sequence of victories became the ‘Hogan Slam’.
