After a career-changing win, South African golfer Yurav Premlall felt on top of the world after securing the Catalunya Championship in Spain.
Premlall made history with the win as he scored a remarkable 28-under par, leaving the rest of the competitors far behind. This was his first win on the DP World Tour and the second of his career.
“I have no words. I have worked so hard to get into this position, and it’s so rewarding to finally see the results of it. The last eight or nine months have been such a struggle just to build myself onto a platform where I know I can give myself a chance to win, and to end up in this position, I’m just so grateful, and it’s a dream come true,” said Premlall.
Premlall cruised to a 14-shot win at Real Club de Golf El Prat in Barcelona. Fellow South African golfer Shaun Norris finished in second place with a score of 14-under par.
The margin fell short of only Tiger Woods’ historic win at the 2000 U.S. Open, which remains the largest winning margin in major championship history. Premlall’s win also surpassed Ernie Els’ record at the 2005 BMW Asian Open, which he won by 13 shots.
On top of that, the 22-year-old concluded the tournament with back-to-back course-record rounds. A final-round 63 sealed the deal as he claimed the title.
This win also earned Premlall the biggest paycheck of his young career. He secured approx €398,000 with the victory, along with an additional $50,000 bonus for matching the course record.
Premlall had little momentum coming into this tournament.
Premlall’s Recent Record On The DP World Tour
Before this win, Premlall had been in a rough run of form.
Just a week ago, he missed the cut at the Turkish Airlines Open by nine shots before heading to Barcelona.
In March, he shot 6-over par and finished tied for 31st at the Hero Indian Open.
Premlall also delivered a decent performance at the DP World PGTI Open, where he secured a T22 finish. His appearance at the Joburg Open was disappointing as he failed to make the cut and finished T75.
