"It's Been a Tough Couple of Years": Bernd Wiesberger After Volvo China Open Win

Bernd Wiesberger did more than win a golf tournament on Sunday. He came through five years of struggle, doubt, and hard work and showed he still belonged on the DP World Tour.
The 40-year-old Austrian shot a four-under 67 in the final round at Shanghai Enhance Anting Golf Club to win the Volvo China Open by three shots.
He started the back nine three shots behind Adrian Otaegui, but finished the day holding the trophy.
Bernd Wiesberger became emotional after the win and could not hold back his tears. "It's been a tough couple of years," he said. "I played my heart out today. It wasn't pretty at times, but I got it done."
The big moment actually came at the 10th hole. Bernd Wiesberger made birdies on holes 10, 11, and 13 and controlled the tournament. He made no bogeys in the final round and stayed calm under pressure.
Adrian Otaegui, who shot a brilliant 62 in the third round to take a one-shot lead into Sunday, couldn't keep the momentum. He made bogeys on holes 12 and 16, then finished with a double bogey. He ended the round with an even-par 71.
Sweden’s Mikael Lindberg came third at 14 under par, and South Africa’s Shaun Norris finished one shot behind him. However, this win was special to him.
This Was Bernd Wiesberger's First Win Since 2021
This was Wiesberger’s ninth DP World Tour win and his 13th worldwide, but this may have been his most special victory.
The former 2021 European Ryder Cup player had not won since his victory in Denmark four and a half years ago.
Sunday’s win at the $2.75 million event gave him $467,500, a two-year DP World Tour exemption, Race to Dubai points, and a possible place in the PGA Championship.
But when he made the final putt, none of that was on his mind. "Super proud of sticking through hard times on the golf course lately," Wiesberger said. "This is for everyone at home. Couldn't be happier."
He shot rounds of 64, 66, 68, and 67 during the week. He played steady golf and saved his best push for Sunday.
Wiesberger had gone 1,792 days without a win on the DP World Tour. On Sunday in Shanghai, that long wait finally came to an end.
