Jason Day Shares Honest Take on Tiger Woods’ Situation Ahead of Augusta: "Selfish of Him to..."

Jason Day did not hold back at Augusta National on Monday. While discussing Tiger Woods, the fellow PGA Tour pro offered a sharp critique of his hero's decisions.
The 2015 PGA Championship winner spoke about the reality of repeated procedures and recovery. He explained how the constant pain builds reliance on painkillers, and how "there can potentially be a downfall to it."
“I look at it and go, he's just a human being like everyone else, and we have struggles. It's unfortunate, the only thing that I don't understand is that it's a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm's way, as well,” Day said during a press conference at the Masters Tournament on Monday.
Authorities in Florida said Tiger Woods was impaired on March 27 when his Land Rover hit a trailer and overturned on a residential street. Officers reported finding two painkiller pills on him, and he was arrested after refusing a urine test, according to AP.

“But when you're the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything, and that's probably why he's probably driving and a little bit under the influence.”
This also marks the second year in a row he has missed The Masters Tournament, though for different reasons. In March 2025, he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and did not attend the champions’ dinner.
Tiger Woods and the Influence He Holds Over Jason Day
“He was my hero growing up. The reason why I play golf is because of this tournament and Tiger. It's hard to see him go through what he's going through," said Day.
"Especially under the microscope that... it must be hard to be who he is and have everything, everyone look on, kind of down on him," said the 38-year-old.
During Day’s 2015 run, Woods would message him about handling Sundays and closing out tournaments, even stepping in to correct his putting alignment, which Day credits for a stretch of results.
Their interaction also led Day to coach Chris Como, who helped him adjust his swing to manage his back issues.
“Some people want him to fail. Some people obviously want him to succeed. It's really difficult for me to go through that and watch him, and I know that he's getting the help now, which is good. I'm just hoping he comes out on the other side and is better,” added Day.
Day also recalled asking what sustained Woods at the top, receiving a simple reply about working harder that shaped his own approach.
