Jon Rahm Credits Poa Annua Familiarity for Form: "I Just Simply Enjoy This Type of Golf Course"

Spain’s Jon Rahm is putting on a dominant performance at LIV Golf Mexico.

As of now, he holds a five-shot lead in the final round as he chases his second individual trophy of the season. In a recent interview, Rahm mentioned the reason behind such a comfortable display at Mexico City.

Standing at 18-under par, Rahm opened the tournament with a 65 and followed it with back-to-back rounds of 67 to reach 14-under before the final round.

“But I think because I grew up with poa annua greens and I have a bit of an understanding of how they work, maybe I have an ever-so-slight edge in that sense. But I don't know, I think once you start playing a course and you play some good rounds early, you always have a good vibe,” Rahm said.

Rahm’s performance on the back nine has been the real difference. Through the first three rounds, he has scored a combined 11-under par on the back nine. In the third round, he went 5-under par, which included three birdies in his final four holes.

“There is a level of comfort with the type of golf course here, and I grew up on poa annua grass. Most of the courses I grew up playing in bask country aren't flat. The greens are very sloped. Shots are never straight. Yeah, there is a familiarity with it,” Rahm said.

Rahm looks forward to lifting his second title of the season. His win at LIV Golf Hong Kong was followed by a disappointing performance at Augusta. At Club de Golf Chapultepec, Rahm will try to turn things in his favour.

“But you still have to do it. I think I just simply enjoy this type of golf course. Off the tee for the most part, it dictates what you need to do. It doesn't give you a massive amount of options on some of the holes. You just have to do whatever the course is asking you to do.” he added.

Rahm would keep things as they are in the final round to get over the line at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

Jon Rahm’s Record At Club de Golf Chapultepec

Two-time major winner Rahm has always thrived at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

Back in 2020, at the WGC-Mexico Championship, Rahn shot a 10-under-par 61 and set a new tournament and course record. The main highlight of his record was the hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole.

At the 2017 WGC-Mexico Championship, Rahm was in strong contention. However, he couldn’t secure either of the titles. The T3 finish in 2020 is the closest he has come to winning on the course.

“Well, I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve had three chances to win. I’ve had opportunities. And I haven’t managed to pull it off. Let’s see if this is obviously the best chance, right? As it starts tomorrow. It would be a source of great pride,” Rahm expressed his desire to win in Mexico City.

On Sunday, Rahm will give his best to end his winless streak at Club de Golf Chapultepec, a course where he has always put up a strong performance.
