Jon Rahm on how wind conditions create different challenges at The Open

Jon Rahm will head to Royal Birkdale in hopes of securing his third major title. And the Spaniard knows that the wind will be a huge factor at the Southport course.

Ahead of the 154th Open Championship, Rahm was asked about the type of wind that will concern him the most. The two-time major winner gave a detailed answer.

“I think it depends on the hole. There is some benefits to both. When it's downwind, like I mentioned, on some of the holes, you most likely just need an iron off the tee and you'll have a short iron in,” said Rahm.

“Then distance control and stopping the ball on the green becomes a little more difficult. Into the wind, it's easier to stop it, but you're probably going to be hitting driver or long irons in,” he added.

The Royal Birkdale will feature a lot of changes this time, and Rahm believes that the type of wind favoring the players will depend on the hole.

This time around, the fairways are looking hard and remarkably fast. The course appears brown, and Rahm pointed out that the players need to play the wind effectively to bring things in their favour.

“No matter what, you need to strike it really, really solidly. I think, if you get it cross-wind, you get a bit of both worlds where you can use the wind to navigate the ball into the fairway and then try to fight the wind to stop it on the green a little bit easier. It's tricky either way,” Rahm said in an interview, accessed by ASAP Sports.

The new Birkdale layout will feature an increased number of bunkers, longer tees, and fairways lined up with hazards.

Navigating the wind meticulously will be the key to coming out on top at the 154th Open Championship.

Rahm revealed that winning the Claret Jug would be an indescribable feat.

Jon Rahm wants to win the Open badly

Rahm has had three top-10 finishes at the Open but has never been able to cross the line. He would love to join his golfing idol, the Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros, by winning the Claret Jug.

"I've been very fortunate to win majors but to join Seve on that one, to get to three, to get one step closer to a grand slam, it's a lot but anytime I can join Seve in anything he did in golf is incredible. To have my name on the Claret Jug would be indescribable,” said Rahm, as reported by GolfMagic.

Having already secured the Masters and the US Open, Rahm would certainly want to get closer to completing the Career Grand Slam this weekend.

Rahm came agonizingly close to winning the PGA Championship at Aronimink as he tied for 2nd behind Aaron Rai. He has been in hot form on LIV as well.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Spaniard comes out on top at Royal Birkdale.
