While the golf world digested PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp's recent restructuring plans, one of the sport’s biggest names was still in the dark.

Two-time major winner Jon Rahm learned about the new two-tier system during a press conference at this week’s Genesis Scottish Open, his first PGA Tour event of the season. The tournament is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour.

“I haven’t even seen it. No idea,” Rahm said.

“Yeah, I think it’s a part of golf, right? You’re going to have two different tours within the PGA Tour and then the Korn Ferry? That’s not the first time I’ve heard that, so it’s not a surprise that that would happen.”

Rolapp announced at the Connecticut conference that the PGA Tour will consist of two series of events: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. Rahm had heard of the idea earlier.

Rahm also voiced concerns about the FedEx Cup points system.

“And when we show up to the Tournament of Champions, if you didn’t play in the fall, you were a thousand points behind somebody. I don’t feel like it’s fair for the points race to start in January,” Rahm said, as reported by Bunkered.

Beyond his thoughts on the PGA Tour’s new structure, Rahm also shared what he hopes the changes could mean for Spain.

Rahm wants bigger events in Spain

As part of the new changes, top players from the Championship Series will also take part in a limited series of elevated international events. Rahm wished for an elevation in the Spanish Open’s status.

“The Spanish Open, I would hope for it to become a bigger event. When I was growing up, Spain had five to eight DP World Tour events. They were all quite big. I think we have enough of a footprint in the history of the DP World Tour with Seve [Ballesteros] and Sergio [Garcia] and many others have done. I think Spain deserves to have a bigger event,” said Rahm, as reported by Bunkered.

The three-time Spanish Open winner wants his national Open to be part of the elevated events. The Open, founded in 1912, has a rich history, and Rahm believes that Spain would offer a perfect environment for a big event.

“So if that opens the opportunity for that to happen, yeah. I think it shouldn’t be the hardest sell. If you can get the right sponsor, the right course and the right prize money, it’s not that hard to go to Spain,” he added.

The PGA Tour has yet to disclose the elevated events and has not provided full details on the two tracks of events. It remains to be seen whether Rahm’s request will be acted upon.
