Jon Rahm was one of LIV’s marquee signings in 2023 and was given a lucrative contract. Now, with the league facing funding uncertainty, questions have emerged over whether LIV can continue meeting the conditions tied to his deal.
Rahm joined the PIF-backed league in December 2023, reportedly signing a $300 million deal through the end of 2029. The recent investment blow has raised questions about whether the league can uphold his contract.
“The contract we signed calls for 14 tournaments with purses of at least $25 million. If they put together a smaller schedule for less money, which is obviously the only path forward, the contract we signed is voided. At least, that’s how we see it. If they disagree, the lawyers are going to have to sort it out,” said a LIV agent to Skratch's Alan Shipnuck.

After the PIF announced its decision to withdraw funding from the league, LIV CEO Scott O'Neil has been spearheading efforts to secure investment in the range of $350 million.
A reduced 10-event schedule with significantly lower purses is reportedly being pitched to potential investors, potentially violating player contracts and raising questions over which court would have jurisdiction in any legal dispute.
“But we don’t even know who has jurisdiction. LIV has offices in New York, Palm Beach and London. And obviously the PIF is based in Saudi. Where does a lawsuit get filed?” said another agent.
"The whole thing is a mess," he added.
About three and a half years remain on Rahm’s contract. Recent reports from the Financial Times stated that the league did receive funding earlier this month.
However, uncertainty still lingers around the remaining events of the season. Through all this, Rahm has remained composed about his future.
Rahm On LIV Golf’s Future
Rahm has backed the management to figure out the future of the league and has stayed in his lane as a player.
“My job is to play golf, and that’s what I can focus on,” he said. “It’s the people in charge of LIV – whose job I do not envy for a second, not now, and not when things are going well – it’s their job to fix it.”
Through all this chaos, Rahm has performed consistently this season and has won two titles. The Spaniard currently stands atop the Individual Rankings List and also finished tied second at the Wanamaker Trophy last month.
“I have faith in the work that they’re doing. I have faith that they’re going to come up with a good plan," Rahm added.
LIV Golf’s future holds many possibilities, and with time, clarity will be obtained regarding the players’ contracts.
