Jordan Spieth Highlights Exciting Changes on Renovated Course Including Potential Drivable Par-3

Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth is in strong contention at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Minimal practice time did not stop him from praising the course's $22 million renovation.

World Golf Hall of Famer Lanny Wadkins, a 21-time PGA TOUR winner and former Ryder Cup captain, led the $22 million renovation. After the second round, Spieth praised the results.

“I think it's awesome. I think the TOUR's done a good job with the tee boxes on the par-3s because there's obviously a design element to it where it's not just like you're supposed to play the back of every box to every pin,” said Spieth.

Spieth further added that the renovation made the third hole "drivable." The change has also created "some fun spots."

However, despite living in Dallas, Spieth could not get around to playing the renovated course much. Having played 13 of the last 16 weeks, Spieth got a closer look at the course during the Pro-Am tournament on Wednesday.

Spieth expressed disappointment over the lack of preparation he had on the new course. Especially on the back nine, Spieth felt he suffered and questioned his approach to the tournament.

“But I think it's awesome. I think the problem right now is that this is like the first time in the history of Dallas, Texas, that you'll have four or five days of very little east wind and soft conditions in May,” added Spieth.

The 32-year-old stated that the conditions would create a significantly harder but also fair outcome for the players.

Heading into the weekend, Spieth sits tied for seventh place. He skyrocketed up the leaderboard after shooting a bogey-free 62 in the second round.

Spieth surged during the second round.

“They were all very scorable clubs, but pins you had to kind of hit it on the correct side or hit a really good number at. But the hole started to look big, so that allows me to play a little bit safer on my approaches,” said Spieth.

The former World No. 1 made six consecutive birdies in a row at the start of the round. With that, he tied his personal PGA Tour record and finished 12-under par.

Currently, he stands six strokes behind second-round leader Si Woo Kim.

Being from Texas, Spieth has played in the tournament many times. However, he is yet to win the title.
